OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR

SUMMARY Primary responsibilities are to supervise the daily operations, cleaning, treatment, disposal and maintenance of a waste disposal plant facility. Assures compliance with established environmental, regulatory, safety, operating standards, policies and emergency response procedures. Spends considerable amount of time coaching employees on operational and safety procedures. Works directly with employees to increase their skill level and competency. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND DEMANDS (List the work environment and physical demands encountered while performing the essential functions of the job. Spends significant amount of time in operations environment and sometime in the office environment. May need to drive company vehicles in the course of job duties. Occasional travel for training and meetings. Exposed to possible operations hazards including dust, fumes, chemicals, machinery, hot or cold work temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in work environment is usually moderate. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, climb, crouch, and kneel; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. - High School diploma, trade school or general education degree (GED) required. Ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational process, safety and quality instructions) a must. Some college preferred. PC skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word.
- At least three years operations experience and some lead experience with thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in a similar environment. Mechanical aptitude essential.
- Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
- Be an example of integrity and honesty to the less experienced staff and set the bar and expectation with subordinates.
- Proven and professional leadership skills and abilities with supervisory responsibilities a must.
- Exposure to shift scheduling cost control, safety, environmental and facilities/capital equipment management.
- Demonstrates leadership ability and ability to coordinate resources (personnel, equipment, materials, facilities, funds and reputation).
- Ability to prepare accurate, effective, complete and easily understood written communications and reports.
- Must have the ability to diagnose process problems, troubleshoot basic equipment and take corrective action within policy and procedure limitations.
- Must understand and follow all safety policies and apply good safety practices while working and possess an exemplary safety record.
- Must have ability to handle diverse tasks simultaneously and be able to work effectively in a fast paced environment with interruptions. Adaptation to change essential.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the care and use of all site specific, facility required Personal Protection Equipment.
- Must pass a drug screen, pre-employment physical and background check.
- Must have ability to communicate at all levels including engineers, operations staff, mechanical and electrical staff and with customers.
- Knowledge and understanding of inventory tracking for equipment and supplies for facility.
- Plans daily/weekly activities and work schedule and recommends overtime as needed. Supervises daily operation and maintenance and ensures compliance with operational, QA/QC, safety, and environment, practices and procedures. Ensures that resources are being utilized cost effectively to achieve site objectives. Teaches cost control and provides effective counsel/direction, especially where corrective actions are needed. Goals and other performance and P&L metrics.
- Proactively oversees safety, facility appearance and environmental issues and ensures compliance with federal and state standards including Waste Disposal requirements. Ensures that issues are identified and addressed and elevated if necessary in a timely manner.
- Facilitate, conduct and provide recordkeeping for pre-tower safety meetings.
- Understanding of and follow through with incident reporting procedures, including appropriate protocol in informing top management on accidents, causes and cost.
- Works with sales and other internal departments to communicate and resolve customer concerns in a timely and diplomatic manner.
- In conjunction with Operations Manager, partners with Human Resources and HSE to provide input into hiring and firing, performance evaluation, salary and job change actions. Coaches and counsels' team and document employee relations issues. Ensures that all employees receive safety training. Oversees and reviews performance of 3rd party contractors on site.
- Assists in sourcing equipment, materials, supplies, parts and/or services needed to operate and maintain site.
- Prepares reports for management and regulatory purposes as required.
- May be asked to fill in or help handle excess workload demands frequently.
- Ensures that business initiatives and goals are effectively communicated to employees as appropriate.
- Demonstrates objective listening on a consistent basis and creates and maintains an environment that encourages open communication.
- Promotes respect within and outside the work group teaches and encourages collaborative problem solving and effective working relationships.
- Demonstrates a high degree of confidentiality and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues.
- Interfaces daily with multiple internal and external contacts.
