Maintenance Worker

Job TitleThis is a non-exempt, seasonal position limited to 1,300 hours annually.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis position involves performing unskilled to semi-skilled work in the maintenance and upkeep of public parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields, pools, and related facilities. Key duties include:Performing work completely independently and/or leading a crew of other seasonal workers.Cutting grass with mowers and grass trimmers.Operating a variety of hand tools and power equipment.Performing semi-skilled painting work.Performing general maintenance in aquatic facilities.Monitoring, handling, and installing chemicals for swimming pools under the direct supervision of the facility Certified Pool Operator.Performing light repairs to swimming pool structures, fences, and gates.Loading and unloading dirt, gravel, and other debris.Cleaning, maintaining, and servicing equipment and tools.Assisting in the adjustment, repair, replacement, and installation of irrigation equipment.Performing athletic field preparation and maintenance.Picking up trash in the park areas and disposing of it properly.Cleaning restrooms and picnic pavilions.Maintaining and performing light repair work on equipment, pools, buildings, and grounds operated by the Parks and Recreation Department.Moving and setting up for park functions including moving picnic tables, bleachers, and chairs for concerts and special events.Cutting down and removing limbs, branches, and trees that have been damaged by adverse weather conditions and performing preventive tree maintenance under the supervision of the Program Coordinator - Forestry.May be required to safely operate a motor vehicle for the purpose of driving to work locations and performing the essential functions of the position.Physical RequirementsThe position requires:Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds, frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.Frequently standing and walking for prolonged periods of time to observe for safety hazards and perform daily functions.Using manual dexterity to manipulate supplies, tools, and equipment.Using visual acuity to read operating manuals and instructions; may safely operate a vehicle and equipment; identify hazards; and perform daily functions.Frequently performing activities requiring a full range of body movements including sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, twisting, walking, and balancing.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThe candidate should possess:Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public, and other agencies and organizations.Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner.Knowledge of and the ability to use common hand tools such as drills, loppers, shovels, rakes, etc.Ability to operate power equipment such as string trimmers, hedge trimmer, edgers, blowers, etc.Some knowledge and/or the ability to learn about occupational hazards and safety precautions.Sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds and to repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing more than one hundred (100) pounds with assistance.Knowledge of practices used in the operation of equipment and the ability to carry them out.Ability to work with unpleasant waste, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.Literacy in English with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules.Ability to pick up garbage, clean, mop, and sanitize all parks and restroom facilities, and generally police all pools, parks, recreational areas, and facilities.Ability to work flexible hours and perform occasional overtime with some weekend and holiday work required.Ability to report for work on time and perform the duties of the job for an entire workday.Ability to maintain accurate time sheets and submit them to a designated supervisor in a timely manner.Ability to follow City policies and regulations.Minimum QualificationsTo qualify for this position, candidates must:Be 18 years of age or older.Have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.Submit to and pass a pre-employment background check.Submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screen.Preferred QualificationsPreferred qualifications include:A valid driver's license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment.License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification.During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license.Special Conditions of EmploymentPosition may require occasional overtime with some weekend and holiday work required. Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physical exertion throughout the workday with close daily contact with unpleasant materials and working outdoors under occasionally adverse weather conditions. All City facilities and vehicles are tobacco-free. If you are required to drive for the position all required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination. Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. City of Pueblo Temporary and Seasonal Employee Sick Leave Benefits Beginning January 1, 2021, all employers in Colorado are required to provide paid sick leave to employees under the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act ("HFWA"). Said leave is accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours. Per the Act, leave may be used for any of the following reasons:The employee has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.The employee needs to care for a family member who has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.The employee or family member has been the victim of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or harassment and needs to be absent from work for purposes related to such crime; orA public official has ordered the closure of the school or place of care of the employee's child or of the employee's place of business due to a public health emergency, necessitating the employee's absence from work.Consistent with the HWFA, part-time temporary and seasonal employees of the City shall not carry forward more than forty-eight (48) hours of unused sick leave from one year to the next. Pueblo Municipal Code 6-6-5.5, 6-6-5 and 6-6-6 City employment as a temporary or seasonal employee means that the most you can expect to work is 1300 hours in a calendar year. Depending on the work schedule required by the hiring department, this means more time to spend with your family and/or doing other activities.
