About the Department The Science House (TSH) is the College of Sciences statewide K-12 STEM outreach unit. Established in 1991, TSH is a national model of university collaboration between university departments, businesses, and the K-12 community. TSH’s mission is to collaboratively maintain and develop K-12 teacher and student programs that inspire a passion for STEM learning, research, and discovery. The Science House achieves this through four strategic priorities: 1) Teacher Professional Development centered on equipping teachers to use engaging instructional practices, emerging technologies, guided inquiry, and project-based learning; 2) Student Programs focused on problem solving, applied learning, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and competition; 3) Rural Satellite Offices that provide teacher professional development, student programs, and an Equipment and Technology Loan Program in rural, high-need areas; and 4) Broader Impact Support that helps NC State faculty in developing Impact Identities and carrying out broader impacts activities integrated with their research that advance open and participatory science. Essential Job Duties NC Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition for elementary, middle, and high school students. NCSO operates over 25 regional tournaments across North Carolina annually, culminating with the state level tournament held at NC State University each April. The NCSO Secondary Program Coordinator plans and implements all logistical aspects of NCSO’s tournaments for Division B (middle school) and Division C (high school) participants. This position has a high level of authority, performs duties with autonomy and accountability, and requires STEM education content expertise. The Coordinator reports to the NCSO Executive Director. Design and finalize the annual Division B/C competitive slate and tournament schedules to ensure nationwide alignment and local feasibility. Provide on-site leadership at Saturday tournaments across the state, serving as a primary point of contact for real-time problem solving and operational support. Build and sustain strategic relationships with volunteer Division B/C Regional Directors, providing the high-level guidance and resources necessary to execute engaging, high-impact tournaments. Recruit STEM subject matter experts to develop and vet academically rigorous events, examinations, and instructional materials. Purchase and maintain inventory of all educational materials, equipment, supplies, and medals/trophies needed for the successful execution of Division B/C tournaments. Deliver or arrange transportation of material to tournament sites. Manage critical tournament infrastructure, including national registration and insurance compliance, as well as regional fleet/transportation logistics. Recruit, train, and supervise a team of student workers to support operational goals and event execution. Act as the primary administrator for the Avogadro platform for Division B/C, ensuring data integrity for registration and scoring. Provide back‑up support to the Executive Director in the Executive Director’s absence and provide some direct STEM professional development training to K‑12 teachers. Also provide back‑up support for NCSO Division A tournaments upon request. Assist the Director in monitoring and responding to the main NCSO email account. Other program coordination duties as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Post-baccalaureate credentials or bachelor’s degree in secondary science education or a closely related field plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Other Required Qualifications Two or more years professional experience in K‑12 classroom instruction, K‑12 education administration, higher education program coordination, or a closely related field. Demonstrated K‑12 STEM subject content knowledge. Proven ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and implement creative solutions to operational challenges in fast-paced environments. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally to diverse stakeholders, including university faculty, K‑12 administrators, and corporate partners. Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to foster a supportive, collegial, and inclusive team environment. Advanced organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple competing priorities and large-scale program schedules. A genuine commitment to K‑12 STEM education and a passion for fostering student success through competitive learning. Proficiency in navigating digital platforms and the physical stamina to manage on-site tournament requirements. Ability and willingness to travel across North Carolina and work Saturdays during the tournament season. Ability to physically handle, pack, inventory, ship, and store educational materials, tournament equipment, and lab supplies, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Preferred Qualifications Professional experience and/or demonstrated expertise in high-level project management and event planning, with a proven ability to manage complex logistics and maintain meticulous attention to detail under tight deadlines. Experience as a Science Olympiad coach or volunteer. Passion for working with K-12 students. Familiarity with common K‑12 STEM educational materials and lab supplies. Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret, and apply university policies and procedures related to travel and purchasing. NC K-12 Teaching License preferred, but not required.
