Undergraduate Tutor for STEM Tutoring Hub, AY 2026-2027

Position Overview Position title: Non-Senate Percent time: 25% Anticipated start date: 8/26/2026 (or other dates as needed) Position duration: Fall 2026, Spring 2027 Salary range: Estimated $22.14 per hour Position Description The Office of Undergraduate Education tutors will serve as learning assistants for Math, Bio, Physics, Chem, ENGR, and CSE in an open tutoring center format. Tutors increase course proficiency by assisting students in finding their own answers to questions and helping them learn methods to solve problems independently. Support is structured to reinforce course material, with a focus on grasping the content of courses and building student capacity to be successful in future courses. Tutors create an inclusive learning environment, greet students, and explain the functions of the learning centers to new students. Staff review and understand the Employee Handbook, attend pedagogical training events, mentor new tutors, and ensure compliance with Center procedures. Responsibilities Serve as learning assistants for Math, Bio, Physics, Chem, ENGR, and CSE in an open tutoring center format. Qualifications Basic qualifications: Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Grades of B or higher earned in tutored courses, or equivalent. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds, age groups, and learning needs. Possess patience and interest in assisting students. Strong grasp of course concepts. Completed courses required by subject: Math Tutoring: Math 12/22 Chem Tutoring: Chem 100 CSE Tutoring: CSE 24 Physics Tutoring: Phys 9/19 ENGR Tutoring: ENGR 57 Bio Tutoring: Bio 110 Work Authorization Applicants must possess valid authorization to work in the United States. UC Merced is not currently able to sponsor individuals residing outside the United States who would require a new H-1B visa.
