WSDOT is looking for a highly skilled Maintenance Mechanic 4 to join our Northwest Region as a Senior Facilities HVAC Specialist. In this senior-level role, you'll serve as a technical expert responsible for keeping critical building systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. You'll perform advanced installation, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on a wide range of facility systems, including HVAC, water, plumbing, sewer, air, and natural gas systems.

Your expertise will play a vital role in maintaining safe, functional facilities that support WSDOT's employees and operations. This position requires sound technical judgment, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to doing the job right from diagnosing complex system issues to planning and completing maintenance activities. Above all, you'll make safety the foundation of every assignment, considering the well-being of yourself, your coworkers, and the traveling public in every decision and action.

Work is generally performed Tuesday through Friday on four 10-hour shifts; however, weekends, holidays, night work, and extended hours may be required for emergency response and non-scheduled callouts.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Senior Facilities HVAC Specialist will:

• Perform maintenance and repairs to HVAC systems, controls, and equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance and repair of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), and Building Automation Systems (BAS) in regional facilities and on sites including diagnosing issues, developing repair strategies, and coordinating with contractors as necessary.
• Work from a ladder more than 10 feet in height.
• Work in hazardous conditions such as loud noise, heat, cold, vibrations, high voltage electricity, elevations, and confined spaces.
• Operate a WSDOT vehicle to and from sites and regional facilities to perform preventative maintenance on regional facilities.
• Perform maintenance and repair work from motor vehicles, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, and man lifts at heights greater than 50 feet.
• Use hand tools, meters, and other diagnostic tools to repair/replace furnaces, control valves, rooftop units, heating units, and other equipment related to building environmental controls.
• Transport up to 50 lbs.
• Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications on HVAC systems, controls, and equipment to complete assigned work.
• Monitor building set points remotely using web-enabled monitoring systems.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

• Technical HVAC Expertise : Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in the HVAC trade, including the ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on HVAC and related building systems. Ability to diagnose equipment and system issues, determine appropriate repair methods, and safely complete complex maintenance activities.
• Physical Capability & Safety : Ability to safely perform skilled maintenance work in a variety of challenging environments and conditions, including exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures, vibration, electricity and high voltage, elevated work areas, and confined spaces. Ability to safely operate and work from motor vehicles, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, and man lifts at heights exceeding 50 feet while following established safety practices, procedures, and requirements.
• Flexibility, Reliability & Emergency Response : Ability to adapt to changing operational needs and priorities, including working beyond scheduled shifts, responding to emergency call-ins, and collaborating with other work groups to address urgent facility or operational needs. The following qualifications are also required:

• A valid driver's license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
• Completion of EPA Class 2 or possession of an EPA Universal Refrigeration license within 6 months of employment.
• Possession of an EL06 Electrical License
• Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

• HVAC Education & Training: Demonstrated knowledge and technical training in HVAC systems gained through completion of an HVAC apprenticeship, accredited HVAC trade school, or equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on experience.
• Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems: Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC systems. Ability to diagnose system issues and apply appropriate repair and maintenance techniques to support reliable and efficient operation.
• HVAC Controls & Building Automation: Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, troubleshoot, and modify HVAC control systems and building automation systems, including the ability to read and write control code as required to support system operation and performance.
• Honeywell RedLINK Systems: Demonstrated hands-on experience installing, configuring, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing Honeywell RedLINK systems.
• Building Systems Operations: Knowledge of building systems operations and maintenance, demonstrated through possession of a Building Operator Certification Level 1 (BOC 1) or equivalent training, certification, or experience.
• Blueprint & Technical Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read, interpret, and apply blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and other technical documentation to plan and successfully perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
• Facility Equipment Operation: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of facility maintenance equipment and tools while following established operating procedures and safety requirements.
