Advocacy & Strategic Initiatives Intern

Center For Urban Famlies

Job Description

Job Description

About CFUF

The Center for Urban Families (CFUF) is a nationally recognized nonprofit working at the intersection of responsible fatherhood, family stability, and economic mobility. Since 1999, we’ve empowered individuals and families in Baltimore’s most underserved communities to overcome barriers, break the cycle of poverty, and build thriving futures.

Our members (the term we use for those we serve) face complex challenges—many experience housing instability, justice system involvement, and limited access to education and employment opportunities. Through our work, we are committed to advancing equity, strengthening families, and creating pathways to long-term economic success.

Through our All In strategy, CFUF accelerates social and economic opportunity by combining personal accountability, person-centered case management, supportive networks, workforce training, education, and civic engagement. This approach drives lasting impact for individuals, families, and communities.

With a culture rooted in excellence, transparency, and purpose, CFUF fosters a dynamic, mission-driven environment where passionate team members are empowered to make a difference.

The Opportunity

The Advocacy & Strategic Initiatives Intern supports the Department of Advocacy and Strategic Initiatives by contributing to research, analysis, and policy-related efforts that inform decision-making and advance CFUF’s mission. This role provides hands-on experience in the policy research process, offering exposure to legislative tracking, data analysis, and the development of written policy materials.

This internship is ideal for a highly motivated, detail-oriented student interested in public policy, research, and social impact. The Intern will play a meaningful role in supporting advocacy initiatives while gaining practical experience in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Additionally, this position’s broader responsibilities include:

  • Supporting policy research, data analysis, and issue-area exploration
  • Monitoring legislative and regulatory developments
  • Contributing to written materials, including briefs and reports
  • Assisting with project coordination and administrative tracking
  • Collaborating across teams to support advocacy and strategic initiatives

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with occasional meetings or events. This internship opportunity has a 4-week term limit. Alternate scheduling arrangements may be considered based on any academic requirements.

What to Expect from This Opportunity
  • Conduct research using academic literature, government resources, policy reports, and news sources
  • Support issue-area scans and background research for ongoing policy initiatives
  • Collect, organize, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data related to policy topics
  • Assist in developing charts, graphs, and tables for reports and presentations
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments at local, state, and federal levels
  • Summarize policy updates and assess potential implications
  • Contribute to drafting policy briefs, research summaries, memos, and blog content
  • Edit and proofread written materials to ensure clarity, consistency, and accuracy
  • Support project coordination by tracking timelines, deliverables, and documentation
  • Assist with logistics for meetings, interviews, and events related to research and dissemination
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and cross-functional initiatives
  • Attend trainings, briefings, and relevant external events to support learning and development
  • Maintain high standards of ethical research, including proper citation and confidentiality
  • Contribute to a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student at an accredited college or university
  • Completion of at least one year of undergraduate coursework by the start of the internship
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred
  • Coursework or demonstrated interest in public policy, research methods, data analysis, or a related field strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
What Sets You Apart
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources
  • Critical thinking skills with a problem-solving mindset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in research and documentation
  • Interest in public policy, advocacy, and government processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also managing independent tasks
  • Understanding of ethical research practices, including confidentiality and proper citation
  • Enthusiasm for learning and contributing to mission-driven work
  • Passion for advancing social and economic equity through evidence-based policy
