Assistant Controller

A well-established organization is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join its Finance and Accounting team. This key leadership role will oversee core accounting operations, drive an efficient and accurate month-end close, and support the delivery of timely, reliable financial reporting.

Reporting to the Finance Controller, the Assistant Controller will lead the General Ledger Accounting team and provide oversight and support across Accounts Payable, Commissions, and Claims Billing. The role will also play an important part in budgeting, financial analysis, cost allocation, audit coordination, internal controls, and continuous process improvement.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader with strong technical expertise, proven team management capabilities, and the ability to partner effectively with financial and operational stakeholders across a multi-entity environment.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Lead the monthly financial close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery of financial results.
• Oversee the preparation and review of monthly financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
• Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and balance sheet analyses.
• Manage and develop the General Ledger Accounting team, establishing priorities and maintaining reporting deadlines.
• Partner with the Commissions team to review, reconcile, and validate commission reports and statements.
• Provide oversight and support for Accounts Payable and Claims Billing operations.
• Coordinate annual financial statement audit preparation and respond to audit requests.
• Support the Finance Controller with accounting initiatives, financial reporting, and internal control improvements.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting systems, and operational efficiency.
• Coach and mentor accounting staff to strengthen team performance and professional development.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

• Lead the annual operating budget process in collaboration with Finance leadership and department heads.
• Establish budget timelines, assumptions, methodologies, and documentation requirements.
• Maintain departmental budgets and supporting financial models within financial systems.
• Prepare monthly budget-to-actual reports and variance analyses.
• Analyze financial trends, identify key performance drivers, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
• Partner with department leaders to investigate variances and identify opportunities for corrective action.
• Ensure budgets align with approved business objectives and organizational cost structures.

Cost Allocation & Expense Management

• Develop and maintain cost allocation methodologies across departments, entities, and cost centers.
• Ensure allocations are accurate, consistently applied, and appropriately documented.
• Reconcile allocated expenses to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies.
• Periodically evaluate allocation methodologies and recommend improvements.
• Provide financial insights into departmental expenses, cost structures, and opportunities for greater cost efficiency.
• Support initiatives that strengthen expense visibility, accountability, and financial discipline.

Required Qualifications

• Active CPA license required.
• At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
• Experience working in a multi-entity or multi-company environment.
• Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and month-end close processes.
• Experience with budgeting, financial analysis, cost accounting, and cost allocation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict reporting deadlines.

• Experience supporting a publicly traded company or similarly complex organization.
• Previous experience managing, supervising, or mentoring accounting professionals.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, data analysis, and financial modeling.
