Job Summary We are seeking a professional to provide vascular access and care to all inpatients in need of establishing access for intravenous therapy. The role includes starting peripheral IVs, including long peripheral IVs, extended dwell catheters, and bedside midline catheter placement; providing dressing care for central and peripheral venous access lines; performing arterial blood draws as appropriate; and training other professionals in vascular access skills. The professional is proficient in ultrasound guidance for difficult venous access line placement and participates in monitoring and data compilation for vascular access information. Responsibilities Coordinate and consult with the patient’s nurse and Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) to determine the purpose of the service, type of device, fluids/medications to be infused, duration, and appropriateness. Coordinate vascular access with phlebotomy needs for the patient. Take age‑appropriate measures to minimize pain and anxiety (e.g., topical anesthetics, deep breathing, distraction) during the vascular access experience. Label and handle all phlebotomy specimens according to Lurie Children’s policy. Perform repair of central venous access lines as needed per policy. Coordinate and perform central venous access site assessment and dressing changes according to applicable policies. Act as consultation provider for complicated central line associated skin injuries (CASI). Serve as the clinical resource and expert for vascular access (central or peripheral) throughout the hospital. Assess the patient’s venous system and therapy indications, collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, and determine the most appropriate type of venous access considering length of therapy, vessel preservation, medication type, and patient needs. Asses requests and prioritize service calls based on clinical status and service purpose. Act as a patient advocate by collaborating with the LIP and ensuring appropriate device choice for anticipated use and duration. Communicate relevant findings to care providers based on nursing assessment of clinical or psychosocial status. Advocate for pain prevention, pain control, and diversional techniques during vascular access or dressing changes. Document all services provided on the patient’s medical record, including consultative services, patient/parent teaching, placement of devices, pain assessment, and site checks. Act as a preceptor and teacher for nursing and medical staff regarding vascular access and aseptic technique skills. Assist in policy and procedure review for all relevant policies. Assist in product evaluations and decision‑making for vascular access devices, dressings, and related equipment. Collect and compile daily data to provide records of access team activities and service requests. Contribute to hospital quality assurance and improvement activities and participate in research activities as needed. Ensure necessary service coverage by reviewing and coordinating with team members for staffing. Participate in design and production of worksheets, data collection tools, and teaching products. Meet regularly with leadership to review service line and improvement opportunities. Provide teaching on vascular access, aseptic technique, site and dressing care, and venous access skills to nurses and physicians. Participate in central line rounding in ICU settings and act as unit liaison as vascular access specialist. Participate in orientation of nurses and physicians regarding vascular access skills. Provide teaching to patients and families on monitoring their access site and dressing change techniques. Assist in identifying professional learning needs and educational program design for vascular access topics for staff. Act as a community resource to external customers. Check physician orders, verify patient identity using two identifiers prior to any procedure, assess allergy history (including latex) or site restrictions, and treat adverse reactions such as fainting. Use all related equipment according to manufacturer recommendations. Interview and discuss the patient’s past experiences and parental or significant family member preferences to decrease anxiety and pain. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited nursing school. Minimum of two years of patient care experience. Current license as a registered nurse in the state of Illinois. Current CPR/PALS certification. Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture, aseptic technique, and IV‑starting technique. Proficient in using transilluminators and infusion pumps. Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills. Approachability, flexibility, effectiveness in stressful/urgent/emergent situations. Professionalism as a clinical resource, coach, and role model. Ability to teach and facilitate learning in others. Proficiency in PC use and basic word processing. Visa sponsorship may be considered for qualified candidates subject to applicable law and business constraints. Pay Range $40.00–$66.00 hourly.
