Quality Control Manager

The Quality Control Manager oversees on-site activities for a NIST construction project, ensuring work meets contract requirements, industry best practices, and rigorous quality standards. This role focuses on field management, documentation, safety, and compliance while supporting ongoing project growth within a dynamic, expanding organization.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day field activities to ensure project milestones and the overall schedule completion date are achieved.
• Develop and maintain short-interval, look-ahead project schedules to communicate upcoming activities, track progress, and proactively address potential issues.
• Create and sustain a culture that prioritizes safety, health, and cleanliness across the project site.
• Coordinate and manage construction work to ensure it is executed in an orderly, deliberate manner aligned with contract documents and industry best-practice standards.
• Establish and maintain all dimensional controls for the project, including engaging third-party survey and layout personnel when appropriate.
• Verify that all work is installed in a workmanlike manner, ensuring it is plumb, level, straight, and meets quality expectations.
• Plan at least two weeks ahead to identify potential issues early and facilitate effective solutions.
• Obtain all required inspections and ensure that the quality aspects of the physical work are thoroughly documented.
• Ensure all aspects of the project comply with contract terms and applicable legal requirements governing the project and the surrounding community.
• Administer client-specific programs such as Contractor Quality Control (CQC), Safety, and Environmental Stewardship.
• Conduct and attend pre-construction, progress, and other project and staff meetings as needed.
• Participate in regular meetings with internal staff and external stakeholders, including owners and subcontractors, to coordinate work and resolve issues.
• Meet regularly with client representatives to discuss project status, proactively identify and resolve problems, and keep them informed about progress.
• Manage self-performed work to ensure activities are completed within the established project budget.
• Oversee changes in project scope to ensure the most current contract documents are used, minimizing rework and confusion.
• Assist in acquiring subcontractor proposals and verify that scopes of work are clearly defined and met.
• Administer contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and other agreements to ensure that scope, terms, and conditions are consistently and proactively fulfilled.
• Manage punch lists and the project closeout process to ensure timely and complete completion of all work.
• Maintain accurate daily documentation, including timecards, field reports, schedule updates, and email correspondence.
• Provide timely and professional interaction with supporting work groups such as accounting, human resources, and internal support services.
• Direct and manage the workloads of supporting staff, including training, mentoring, and follow-up to promote performance and growth.
• Encourage and participate in lifelong learning and professional development activities for both self and team members.
• Report directly to the on-site Project Manager and provide regular updates on project status, quality, and compliance.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated general construction experience with a strong understanding of field operations and project delivery.
• Hands-on experience in construction quality control, including inspection, verification, and documentation of work.
• Quality Control Certificate, with the ability to apply formal quality control processes and standards on site.
• Experience in government or federal construction projects, with an understanding of related regulations and requirements (federal construction experience preferred).
• Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple field activities to meet schedule and budget goals.
• Strong documentation skills, including maintaining detailed records, reports, and correspondence.
• Ability to interpret and work from contract documents, drawings, and specifications.
• Experience with interior renovation projects and associated quality and coordination requirements.
• Capability to administer and support programs such as CQC, safety, and environmental stewardship.
• Strong communication skills for leading meetings, coordinating with stakeholders, and interacting with clients and internal teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working on federal or government construction projects is highly beneficial.
• Background in interior renovation projects, including coordination of trades and quality assurance activities.
• Ability to mentor and train staff, fostering professional development and continuous learning.
• Comfort working within a growing organization that is affiliated with a larger corporate structure.
• Strong organizational skills to manage punch lists, closeout activities, and multiple documentation streams.
• Attention to detail in dimensional control, layout, and verification of construction work.

Work Environment

This position is based on-site at a NIST project and operates primarily on a day shift schedule. The role is field-focused, with daily interaction on the construction site and close coordination with project management, subcontractors, and support departments. The work environment emphasizes safety, health, and cleanliness and involves active participation in inspections, meetings, and quality control activities. The organization is a small, growing firm affiliated with a larger corporation, offering a collaborative atmosphere where team members contribute directly to project success and organizational growth.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Purcellville, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
