Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing care services in accordance with established standards and practices, ensuring the wellbeing of residents. The LPN is responsible for a variety of tasks that assist in the overall care and treatment of residents.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Observe and report symptoms and conditions of residents.
• Administer medications as prescribed by a physician.
• Provide treatments as ordered.
• Count narcotics and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain records reflecting resident conditions, medications, treatments, and progress.
• Transcribe physician orders received verbally and in writing.
• Place drug orders as necessary.
• Assist with nursing history, assessments, MDS, and care plans.
• Assist in the orientation and supervision of nursing staff.
• Perform direct resident care as needed.
• Adhere to recognized nursing practices and facility policies.
• Participate in continuous in-service education.
• Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities when required.
• Prepare and coordinate assignments for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
• Communicate with physicians regarding resident care.
• Book tests, labs, x-rays, and medical appointments as needed.
• Assist physicians during rounds and prepare charts for signatures.
• Check meal trays for accuracy.
• Directly supervise CNAs.
• Perform all necessary treatments and assessments.
• Handle resident admissions and discharges.
• Notify physicians or nurse practitioners of any changes in resident status.
• Communicate changes in treatment status to family members and healthcare providers.
• Document nurses' notes and keep care plans updated.
• Answer to nursing managers as required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to fifty pounds.
• Ability to push or pull up to forty pounds.
• Able to stand for up to four hours a day.
• Ability to bend, squat, and stoop to floor level.
• Ability to kneel and walk as required.
• Ability to reach heights of up to four and one-half feet.
• Able to see and hear with or without prostheses.
• Able to move intermittently throughout the day.
• Able to cope with physical and mental job stress.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to recognize changes in resident conditions and take appropriate action.
• Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in English in a clear manner.
• Current CPR/AED certification is required.

Education

Must be licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
