Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Position Summary
The Animal Technician supports a laboratory animal research program by providing daily animal care, husbandry, sanitation, health monitoring, and record keeping. The position involves working with laboratory animals, including rodents, across research facilities.

The technician will perform duties in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations, institutional policies, and established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Key Responsibilities

• Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
• Change animal cages and racks according to established procedures.
• Provide food and water and maintain appropriate animal housing conditions.
• Perform animal health observations and promptly report concerns to veterinary, research, and compliance personnel.
• Maintain animal housing rooms, equipment, and work areas.
• Operate cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization.
• Maintain accurate and legible records, including:
  • Per-diem records
  • Animal health surveillance records
  • Feed logs
  • Temperature and humidity charts
  • Animal receipt and disposition logs
• Scan cage barcodes and electronically submit health surveillance information.
• Use email and computer systems for work-related communications, training, and timesheet submission.
• Identify problems, take appropriate corrective action, and report issues immediately.
• Follow all applicable animal care, safety, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform technical procedures as required to support animal care and research activities.
• Work independently or as part of a team under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of animal handling experience or experience operating laboratory animal sanitation equipment.
• High school diploma/GED.
• Knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple species of laboratory animals used in biomedical research.
• Knowledge of animal health monitoring and ability to identify and report health concerns.
• Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
• Ability to operate cage washers and autoclaves.
• General knowledge of applicable federal and regulatory requirements.
• Basic computer and email skills.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established SOPs.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong attention to animal welfare, safety, sanitation, and regulatory compliance.

Education & Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following:

• High school/GED plus completion of training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification through AALAS and one year of applicable animal care experience; or
• High school diploma/GED plus two years of animal care experience involving species appropriate to the position; or
• Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, and reach above shoulder level.
• Ability to remain mobile on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
• Ability to push and pull heavy objects.
• Ability to safely lift or move loads weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including protective clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks, and respirators when assigned.
• Must comply with animal facility restrictions, including no eating or drinking in animal areas and no smoking at campus facilities.

Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has hands-on laboratory animal care experience, understands animal husbandry and sanitation practices, is comfortable working in a regulated biomedical research environment, and demonstrates strong attention to detail and animal welfare.

Additional Information

• Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4:30 PM
• Important Medical Requirement: Full medicals are required for all candidates, regardless of whether the position is onsite, hybrid, or remote.
