Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg

Position Overview

The Med Surg RN delivers inpatient nursing care to adults with a variety of medical and surgical conditions on general medical-surgical units. The role focuses on comprehensive assessment, rapid problem solving, and coordinating care to support timely discharge.

The nurse collaborates with physicians, ancillary staff, and case management to manage multiple concurrent conditions and plan safe transitions to home or other care settings.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient condition and monitor ongoing clinical status, including vitals, labs, and response to treatment.
• Administer medications, injections, and therapies per orders; manage IV lines as ordered.
• Perform basic procedures such as wound care, dressing changes, and specimen collection.
• Monitor and respond to clinical changes; escalate to physicians when needed.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and adjust care plans and discharge planning.
• Document interventions and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record.
• Provide patient and family education on conditions, treatments, and post-discharge care.

Qualifications

Education:

Associate degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program.

Licensure:

Current and valid RN license in the state of practice.

Certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Additional certifications such as ACLS or PALS may be preferred depending on unit

Experience or Skills:

Strong assessment and critical thinking skills; experience in acute inpatient care and EHR documentation; ability to manage multiple priorities.

Experience

• Inpatient Med/Surg or mixed medical-surgical experience
• Experience with coordinating care for diverse medical and surgical conditions

Preferred

• BSN preferred
• Experience with telemetry or post-operative care

Work Environment

General medical-surgical units with variable acuity; typical 12-hour shifts and patient-to-nurse ratios that balance throughput with safety.

Documentation is performed in the electronic health record; collaborative rounds with physicians and therapy services are common.
