Associate Market Solutions Engineer

Overview The NYISO manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across New York. The Spark Rotational Program in the Research Engineering group within Market Structures is a two-year early-career development program designed to grow power system and technology professionals through meaningful work, structured learning, and cross-functional exposure. The Spark Rotational Program Participant will develop technical expertise and leadership skills through two years of rotation across multiple departments while contributing to projects that support the reliability of New York’s power grid. Participants are hired directly into a home department where they build strong technical and professional foundations and also expand their organizational perspective through learning experiences, job shadowing, and partial rotations across multiple departments. This role supports the electric power system model used by scheduling and dispatch software and involves developing knowledge of the New York State high voltage transmission system and network model database software to support NYISO markets and security functions. The position supports real-time power system analysis, EMS and BMS software applications, and the development and evolution of EMS, BMS, and Smart-Grid applications. Strong power systems or electrical engineering background with power system software and/or mathematical optimization knowledge is desired. Key responsibilities and qualifications below describe the scope of work and expectations for the Associate Market Solutions Engineer role. Responsibilities Support and maintain PMU applications such as stand-alone visualization software and EMS-based Voltage Stability Monitoring (VSM). Support the maintenance of EMS and Phasor Data Acquisition and Control systems integration. Contribute to the integrity of Smart-Grid application software by developing and implementing Business Owner Quality Assurance procedures. Support testing of PMU application functions in coordination with NY Transmission Owners and neighboring control areas. Provide Power System Operations Dispatcher support for Smart-Grid applications (ePDC, RTDMS Server/Client, ePDE, Grid-Smarts). Develop and maintain software and operating procedures to address special market and operating conditions under guidance from managers or senior team members. Collaborate with Energy Market Operation and Grid Operation personnel on Market Design initiatives or Network Model projects, including new EMS/BMS platforms. Develop documentation to support Market Design initiatives or Network Model projects and perform related testing activities such as Factory Acceptance or Site Acceptance Testing and regression testing to ensure correct market outcomes with the EMS/BMS platform. Implement modifications to Unit Commitment programs to support additional market functionality in a Mixed Integer Program (MIP) solution, under guidance from management. Provide technical support to Energy Market Operation, Market Validation, Market Monitoring, IT Quality Assurance, and Stakeholder Service in replying to Market Participant questions across all aspects of Market Solutions Engineering. Support testing efforts of Energy Market Operations, including development of Unit Acceptance Test plans for projects affecting the energy market software, and testing efforts for Capacity Market Operations including resource and capacity models. Provide implementation support to product teams by reviewing requirements documents, vendor design notes, and developing User Acceptance Test plans for deployment of enhancements and new features to production. Support external research engagements for NYISO and assist in research initiatives under supervision of the Manager, Market Solutions Engineering. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field required; coursework in power systems, electrical engineering, power system components, and mathematical modeling required; Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is desired. Experience in Electrical Engineering and/or Operations Research with software simulation experience preferred. Experience with Energy Management Systems, Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC), Real-Time Scheduling (RTS), Grid View, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, AMPL, MATLAB or GAMS is highly desirable. Strong Python programming skills; working knowledge of shell scripting and Linux command line desirable. Background in models and databases used in power system analyses and business experience in electric power systems or wholesale electric markets desired. Analytical problem-solving approach, strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, and excellent communication skills to articulate technical problems and solutions. Additional Requirements Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business information, write reports and procedure manuals, and present information to groups of managers, vendors, Market Participants, and the public. Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply quantitative reasoning to practical problems; familiarity with logical or scientific thinking and attention to detail. Proficiency with Windows, MS Office, databases, and internet applications; working knowledge of UNIX is desirable. Work Environment The work environment is typically moderate in noise. Travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends, or holidays.
