ABOUT THE JOB: Tends fabricating machines such as cutoff saws, shears, rolls, brakes, presses, forming machines, spinning machines, and punch, that cut, shape, and bend metal plates, sheets, tubes, and structures by performing the following duties: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operates Fab Shop and Machine Shop machinery and equipment. Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule or template Positions workpiece against stops or aligns layout marks with die or blade Pushes button or depresses pedal to activate machine Observes machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction Measures workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpiece Performs minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies, or workpieces Sets up and performs maintenance on fab and machine shop machines and performs burning work Operates any equipment needed to perform job Performs related duties as assigned by supervision Regular, reliable and predictable attendance is necessary in order to perform the essential functions of this position KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.) Reaching: Grabbing things from a distance above or from the side Kneeling/Crouching: Position self to pick tools and items off floor, cleaning area Stooping: Positions self to pick items off floor (This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.) Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as operating machines and material Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Lifting: Raising object from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position (this factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles) Physical Requirements Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Visual Acuity The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or havey equipment.
