Cornea Laboratory Specialist Make a real impact in a meaningful, hands-on role that helps restore sight

Schedule : Sunday-Wednesday, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM (training: Sunday - Thursday, 8:30 AM -5:00 PM)

Pay : $24.65 per hour + great benefits

Position Purpose:

This mission centered position is responsible for the technical laboratory aspects of eye banking, including the evaluation, processing, and shipping of ocular tissue.

Responsibilities:

• Accurately document donor and tissue information in reports and the eye bank database. 
• Receive, verify, and check in donated tissue and blood products in accordance with established protocols.
• Evaluate corneal tissue using appropriate microscopy to determine an initial suitability.  
• Process tissue for lamellar keratoplasty and determine surgical suitability post-processing.
• Package and prepare tissue for shipment. 
• Operate ultrasonic cleaners and autoclaves to clean and sterilize laboratory instruments and equipment; perform routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment. 
• Maintain laboratory inventory, including stocking supplies and monitoring usage.
• Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement processes. 
• Assist with the development, validation, and qualification of standard operating procedures. 
• Maintain current working knowledge of and compliance with Saving Sight Standard Operating Procedures, EBAA Medical Standards, and applicable federal and state regulations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently with limited direction, as well as collaboratively within a team.
• Ability to learn and maintain proficiency in eye bank laboratory procedures, tissue evaluation, and regulatory standards.

Basic Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record as determined by the organization 
• Must have reliable transportation 

Preferred Requirements:

• Associate or bachelor's degree in a scientific, healthcare, laboratory, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and relevant experience.
• Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician/Assistant (COT/COA) preferred.  
• Prior experience in healthcare or ophthalmology.
• Working knowledge of EBAA Medical Standards, FDA regulations, and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Experience with microscopy, sterile technique, and tissue processing procedures.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail, and accuracy.  
• Ability to handle mental and physical strain involved in the use of printed materials and prolonged use of computer screens.  
• Must be able to perform prolonged microscope work requiring sustained visual focus and static head and neck positioning.
• Must be able to use both hands and arms simultaneously to perform precise and delicate manual procedures, requiring high amounts of finger dexterity.
• Long periods of sitting and/or standing may be required.  
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds. 

Working Environment:

• Work is performed in a combination of laboratory, office, and clinical support environments.
• This role routinely involves exposure to biological materials, blood products, donor tissue, laboratory equipment, and sterile processing environments while adhering to strict safety and quality control.
