The Library Assistant I is responsible for supporting the Sevier County Library System by assisting with the daily operations and public services of the library across multiple locations. Primary responsibilities include checking library materials in and out, re-shelving books, assisting with overdue notices, registering new patrons, and processing incoming and outgoing materials. The position also involves answering reference questions, providing readers advise, supporting computer and technology use, assisting with children's programming, and leading teen activities. Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Director of Library Services based on the accuracy and efficiency of assigned duties, level of support for library operations and programming, quality of patron services, and ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public. Job activities are also subject to annual audits.

Essential duties include:

• Checks library materials in and out, renews items, and processes holds and overdue notices in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Re-shelves books, audio-visual materials, and other items while ensuring proper organization and shelving accuracy throughout the library.
• Registers new patrons for library cards and updates existing records to maintain accurate patron information.
• Answers incoming phone calls, provides basic information, relays messages, and makes calls regarding holds, overdue items, and program reminders.
• Assists library patrons by answering directional and general informational questions in person and by phone.
• Collects fines and fees for overdue materials, printing, copying, and fundraising items while providing clear explanations to patrons.
• Completes daily paperwork including circulation activity logs, financial reports, and documentation for funds received.
• Files circulation-related paperwork in designated locations to ensure proper records management.
• Cleans and repairs DVDs and CDs as needed to maintain material quality and usability.
• Assists with after-school snack service and supervises youth behavior in accordance with the library's Code of Conduct.
• Provides reader's advisory and assists patrons with catalog searches and locating materials within the library.
• Assists patrons with basic technology use including public computers, printing, scanning, faxing, and wireless access.
• Provides one-on-one guidance for patrons using digital library services and check-out technology such as tablets and Wi-Fi hotspots.
• Assists with planning, preparation, and support for programs and events for children, teens, and adults as assigned.
• Creates and updates bulletin boards, displays, and educational flyers on library topics and services.
• Catalogs magazines and performs other basic cataloging tasks as directed.
• Supports passive programming efforts and promotes library events and services to patrons.
• Delivers interoffice materials, books, and supplies between the main library and branch locations as needed.
• Participates in regular staff meetings, professional development activities, and program planning sessions.
• Communicates effectively and respectfully with patrons of diverse backgrounds and abilities to ensure positive library experiences.
• Provides backup support at other library service desks or departments when necessary to ensure uninterrupted service.
• Reports facility or maintenance issues to the Library Director or designated staff when custodial personnel are unavailable.
• Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

Position qualifications include:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Tennessee driver's license and to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
• Ability to pass a physical and drug screen administered through a licensed physician.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as scheduled and travel between library locations as needed.

Preferred:

• Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a public library or similar public service environment.

Supervisory requirements: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Competencies include:

• Working knowledge of Sevier County Library System policies and procedures, including circulation processes and services.
• Ability to make timely and appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures, using sound judgment and discretion.
• Demonstrated ability to accurately perform basic accounting/bookkeeping transactions in a consistent and organized manner.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and complete assignments efficiently.
• Ability to remain informed about developments and best practices in library services and apply them effectively on the job.
• Ability to interact courteously and effectively with library patrons of all ages, co-workers, supervisors, local officials, and the general public.
• Proficiency in performing general administrative duties, including filing, data entry, and recordkeeping.
• Ability to provide assistance and training to patrons on the use of basic technology, including computers, tablets, library software, and digital resources.
• Ability to present engaging story time sessions and assist in delivering age-appropriate educational programming for children and youth.
• Skill in the use of modern office equipment, library automation systems, and standard computer software applications such as Microsoft Office.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and a high standard of public service.
• Willingness to assist with light physical tasks, including re-shelving materials, setting up for programs, and occasional lifting or moving of supplies.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities, multitask in a busy environment, and learn new procedures or technologies as required.

Physical demands include:

• This is a light work position requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds occasionally, up to 15 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
• Work requires moderate flexibility, mobility, and speed of limb movement, with frequent periods of walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
• Requires considerable steadiness of arms and hands, as well as manual and finger dexterity, to handle books, materials, and office or computer equipment.
• Vocal communication is essential for expressing or exchanging ideas with patrons, co-workers, and other stakeholders.
• Hearing is required to interpret verbal instructions and respond to questions or environmental sounds in both quiet and noisy settings, including the ability to determine the direction of sounds.
• Visual acuity is needed for detailed work such as reading, using office equipment, identifying defects in materials, color differentiation, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Work environment includes:

• Operates in a public library environment with moderate noise levels, involving regular interaction with patrons, coworkers, and use of computers, phones, and general office equipment.
• The position is primarily indoors but may require occasional work outdoors for tasks such as deliveries, events, or maintenance support in varying environmental conditions.
• General work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; some flexibility is required for evening and weekend shifts to support library programs, events, or extended service hours.
• Travel between branches within Sevier County may be required; reliable transportation is necessary for performing assigned duties at multiple locations.
