Podiatric Medicine And Surgery Residency
This division strives to provide each participating resident with the best possible exposure in the delivery of podiatric medical and surgical care consistent with the training objective of the respective programs and reflective of the healthcare delivery system. Rotations at institutions located outside of the College and its affiliated Foot Clinics provide opportunities to experience and participate in podiatric medical care at the graduate level. The New York College of Podiatric Medicine/ Metropolitan Hospital residency program is designed as a 36-month program offering a Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency with the additional credential in Reconstructive Rear-foot/Ankle Surgery (PMSR/RRA). It is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) and is accredited by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. This residency program provides the recent graduate with the opportunity to experience the problems of general practice and to study advances and related sciences essential to the practice of podiatric medicine, podiatric surgery, and primary podiatric medicine. This program also provides a more effective method of improving community foot health and prepare the resident for interaction with the total community health care team.
To be eligible to participate in the training program each resident is required to have a Limited NYS Permit for the year. Current NYS regulations state that this must be renewed by application each year. In the event that a resident possesses a full, valid NYS License, a resident permit is also required. This permit must be obtained prior to July 1 or the resident cannot participate in the program.
Responsibilities
- Residents will be selected for a one-year term beginning July 1 of the current year and ending June 30th of the following year unless by mutual agreement of the DPME and resident.
- A resident may advance to or be placed in a successive year of training by meeting applicable requirements as below:
- Successful completion of the current year in residency.
- Achieving a satisfactory annual evaluation of the resident's performance from the residency review committee.
- Acceptance by the residency selection committee, in the case of transfer-in resident(s).
- Matriculation to a successive year is not guaranteed. Matriculation is based upon successful performance of the resident at each level and available positions for the respective training year.
- Resident stipend is determined for each year and stated in the residency contract. Group term life insurance and long-term disability are provided for the resident with the same conditions that apply to full-time faculty of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Group health insurance will be offered as an option as such:
- Coverage through the College's employee group health insurance plan will require the same cost-sharing as that offered to regular full-time faculty of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.
- Both plans meet the standards as set forth in the Federal mandate of the Affordable Healthcare Act. All benefits and health insurance plans are subject to change at any time for any reason.
- Residents are insured under the NYCPM professional liability program, or by the hospital, while functioning within the written description of their residency program and while in full compliance with the requirements of the following paragraphs of this Article 6.
- The Residency Selection Committee shall be composed of the Residency Director (DPME), On-Site Directors of affiliated hospitals and FCNY department chairpersons or their designees.
- Each hospital has an On-Site Director of Podiatry (see Affiliates Directory). The resident reports to the On-Site Director at the respective assigned hospital.
- Each resident is required to maintain appropriate logs and a daily activity journal for his/her respective program in the format prescribed by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education- Podiatry Residency Resource (PRR). Failure to do so will result in disciplinary actions. These actions include probation, suspension or delayed completion of the program at the resident's expense.
- Residents will comply with Affiliated Hospitals' and Institutions' Policies and Procedures as defined by the respective institutions.
- All residents shall follow the published residency schedule. All residents shall report to their designated assignments at the prescribed hour. There will be no changes in the schedule other than those approved by the respective Residency Director in written formal approval by the Dean of Graduate Medical Education. Hospital assignments may be changed at any time, without prior notice, by the Dean of Graduate Medical Education.
- Residents shall be always available for assigned rotations, services, and on-call schedule. All rotations are to be covered during the assigned periods regardless of season or holiday.
- Conflicts, criticisms, and all other problems involving the residents and other hospital personnel, departments, or staff members shall be brought to the attention of the On-Site Director. The On-Site Director may settle the problem or contact the Director of Residency Education. Depending on the severity of the problem, the Dean may be notified. Written incident reports for resident unprofessional behavior may be filed by the attending staff with the Office of Graduate Medical Education for further review and action.
