Director, Tenant Justice Program (Attorney)

Rising for Justice (“RFJ”) seeks a licensed attorney (DC Bar or eligible to waive in) to lead litigation strategy and supervise our housing team. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, this position provides oversight of program staff to ensure compliance with organizational policies and serves as a model of excellent workplace practices. This is a management position and is part of RFJ’s senior leadership team. Position Responsibilities Leading litigation strategy for RFJ's Housing Practice as Chair of the Case Acceptance Committee, setting case priorities, and directing case assignments and referrals. Serving as attorney of record on eviction defense and housing matters, providing direct representation, including extended and limited scope representation, brief services, and co‑counseling, in accordance with established workload expectations. Supervising a team of attorneys and paralegals handling eviction defense and housing litigation for income‑eligible DC residents. Directing RFJ's participation in the Landlord Tenant Legal Assistance Network (LTLAN), the central intake system for eviction defense and housing matters. Reviewing case strategy and litigation status with staff attorneys at least bi‑weekly, ensuring compliance with case practice standards. Participating in bi‑weekly meetings of the Housing Advocacy and Litigation Clinic (HALC) and weekly law student classes. Teaching litigation skills to law students and clinic participants, running trial simulations and moot exercises, and developing litigation curriculum with the Director of HALC. Building and running RFJ's in‑house litigation and case practice training program for TJP staff. Coordinating with other RFJ practice groups on cross‑unit litigation strategy and case outcomes. Ensuring accuracy of case‑related data and litigation records, including entries in Qualtrics. Representing RFJ in collaborative meetings with outside legal services providers on housing litigation matters. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications J.D. and active membership in the DC Bar, or eligible to waive in. At least 6 years of litigation experience, including substantial housing or eviction defense litigation; supervisory or management experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated trial and courtroom experience, with the judgment to set litigation strategy and manage a docket of contested housing matters. Clinical teaching experience, familiarity with DC landlord‑tenant law, experience representing low‑income clients, and fluency in Spanish are preferred. Hours, Salary and Benefits This is a full-time position with a 40‑hour workweek. A fixed scale determines RFJ salaries based on years of relevant experience. The salary scale for this position is $115,000 to $120,000 annually.
