Vessel Operator

The Vessel Operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining response vessels while supporting emergency environmental response, oil spill recovery, and remediation projects. This position plays an important role in on-water containment, recovery, and cleanup activities and also assists with routine vessel operations, line handling, environmental services, and industrial projects.

The ideal candidate is safety-focused, comfortable working in demanding outdoor and industrial environments, and available to respond to emergencies outside of normal business hours.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform fieldwork for marine and environmental projects under direct or indirect supervision.
• Safely operate and maintain response vessels ranging from 24 to 32 feet.
• Tow, launch, retrieve, and secure vessels and related equipment.
• Perform vessel line handling and other routine marine operations.
• Conduct required safety inspections on vessels, vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
• Safely operate vehicles for which properly licensed.
• Deploy and operate oil spill response equipment, including containment boom, skimmers, pumps, and related tools.
• Complete routine vessel inspections and basic maintenance to maintain operational readiness.
• Respond to oil spills and other environmental emergencies in marine and shoreline environments.
• Perform containment, recovery, cleanup, and remediation activities.
• Support environmental remediation, industrial cleaning, and other scheduled service projects.
• Participate in emergency callouts during nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Follow all organizational policies, client requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses.
• Follow site-specific health and safety plans.
• Properly use personal protective equipment and follow hazardous-material-handling procedures.
• Complete daily work reports, timesheets, inspection forms, and safety documentation accurately and on time.
• Immediately report equipment problems, incidents, injuries, and safety concerns.
• Perform other related duties based on project and emergency response needs.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
• Perform duties in marine, industrial, and potentially hazardous environments.
• Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
• Travel to project and emergency response locations as required.
• Work extended shifts during emergency response operations.
• Adapt to changing physical demands and environmental conditions based on the project.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Experience operating small vessels.
• Ability to safely tow, launch, retrieve, and maneuver vessels.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures and technical instructions.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor and industrial environments.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule and respond to emergency callouts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
• United States Coast Guard Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels license, commonly known as a "6-Pack" license.
• Transportation Worker Identification Credential card.
• Previous experience in oil spill response, marine operations, environmental remediation, or industrial services.
• Current 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.

Schedule and Availability

• Flexible schedule and on-call availability are required.
• Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during emergency response operations.
• Overtime and travel may be required based on project and response needs.
