Lower School Librarian (Part-time)
The Buckley School, Los Angeles' oldest K-12 all-gender learning institution, has an opening for a part-time Librarian for the 2026-2027 school year. This position is responsible for managing all professional aspects of our vibrant, full-service library for Lower School students and staff. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic storyteller deeply familiar with culturally responsive teaching practices and multicultural education, and with the ability to spark a foundational love of reading and inquiry in our youngest learners, while possessing experience in an independent school setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise the daily operations of the Lower School Library when students read, play games, and work with reading buddies.
- Work closely with the Lower School Head to design programming that complements the curriculum and needs of the Lower School community.
- Evaluate and select books for the Lower School Library that promote a love of reading, support the Lower School curriculum, and, in collaboration with the DEI team, provide representation across identity.
- Collaborate across departments to support needs of the school overall, including making the library available to host Admission Open Houses, parent education programs, and speakers from outside organizations.
- Plan and teach library classes to students in kindergarten through second grade.
- Read aloud to students in kindergarten, first, and second grade.
- Oversee, staff, and supervise the Library Parent Volunteer Program.
- Collaborate with and supervise the Upper School Reading Buddies Program.
- Create adjunct programming for fourth and fifth grade students to advance their love of reading including book clubs and bringing in guest authors.
- Serve as a resource person for faculty and for curriculum development related to language arts, social studies, and DEI.
- Organize the annual book fair in conjunction with the Advancement Office and Parents Association.
Procedural Responsibilities
- Upholds all expectations, policies and practices outlined in the school's employee handbook, the collective bargaining agreement, other foundational documents, and directives from senior administrators.
- Maintains accurate and timely electronic records for the library and associated teaching responsibilities.
Students/Staff/Community Relations
- Create warm and uplifting professional relationships with students, families, and all constituencies of the school.
- Communicate with students, families, and administrators in a timely and effective manner concerning student progress.
- Serve as an ambassador for the school at all times, on and off campus, for example but not limited to upholding the expectations in the employee and family handbooks; speaking positively about the school and its community members; participating in the school's efforts to recruit and retain new families, faculty and staff; etc.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- At least two years previous library work experience, preferably at the elementary or grade school level, a Master's Degree or state credential in a related field preferred.
- Teaching background in an independent school preferred.
- Demonstrated competency in diversity, equity and inclusion.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Possesses knowledge of k-5 literacy development and K-5 literature.
- Understands K-5 social and emotional development.
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills, including classroom management skills for K-5.
- Communicates well in various in person settings, in writing, and using different technological platforms.
- Utilizes strong organizational skills and attends to details.
- Demonstrates strong computer skills with hands-on proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Blackbaud/Education Edge, Zoom, and the ability to learn new and evolving technology.
- Models the highest standards of professionalism and creates warm, uplifting and trusting learning environments and working relationships marked by humor, positivity, humility, empathy, excellent emotional intelligence, extraordinary interpersonal skills, and collaboration.
- Demonstrates great individual integrity, initiative, self-awareness, commitment to personal and professional growth, and the ability to receive and apply feedback.
- Possesses a passion for education, particularly in an independent school environment, conveyed by a solid understanding of educational practice and philosophy grounded in DEI.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated competency in diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Relishes the joys and challenges of working with k-12 students and possesses a deep understanding of the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of children.
- Demonstrates adaptability, dependability, good judgment, and strong social and decision-making skills.
- Significant experience implementing instructional programs.
- Demonstrates strong communication skills in person, in writing, by phone and through other electronic means (such as Zoom).
COMPENSATION:
The Buckley School is comprised of faculty who are brand new teachers to experts in their field with over 40 years of experience. The broad range which includes all experience levels is $65,041 - $134,160. As a school with a unionized faculty, compensation is determined in partnership with the union through the collective bargaining agreement which is currently being renegotiated and may result in adjustments to this range. The base salary is separate from fringe benefits, such as retirement contributions, daily lunch, on-site parking, contributions to medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D plans, our generous time off policy, or potential stipends (for eligible employees). Our pay ranges are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed.
