Legal Rule 9 Intern Date: April 21, 2026 The City of Puyallup is hiring a Legal Intern to begin in late May or early June 2026. The internship is authorized under Washington State Rule 9-A for limited licensing and focuses on criminal prosecution with potential civil work as time permits. The intern works closely with the prosecutor’s office, law enforcement, judges, the defense bar, and the public. Compensation $27.00 per hour. Paid sick leave is provided per state law. This position does not qualify for benefits. Hours Part‑time; hours set in collaboration with the employee. Responsibilities The Criminal Rule 9 Intern assists in the prosecution of violations of the City’s criminal and civil codes under the direction of a supervising attorney. Office duties include reviewing charging decisions, preparing cases for filing, and drafting documents for court filing. The Rule 9 Intern represents the City in municipal court for criminal proceedings such as arraignments, pre‑trial hearings, evidentiary and motions hearings, and sentencing review hearings; opportunities may include second‑chairing jury and/or bench trials. The position may also prepare and present contested infraction hearings in municipal court. Performs other duties as assigned. Must pass a criminal history background check. Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.
