General Maintenance Worker (Anticipated Vacancy)

General Maintenance
The General Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance activities throughout Southampton County Public Schools facilities and grounds. The position supports the safe, clean, functional, and efficient operation of district buildings, grounds, equipment, and related systems. The General Maintenance Worker performs a broad range of building maintenance activities, including carpentry, painting, drywall repair, minor plumbing and electrical work, doors and hardware, furniture and equipment installation, grounds maintenance, and general facility repairs. The employee also assists specialized maintenance personnel with larger repairs and projects and works collaboratively with the Maintenance Supervisor, other maintenance personnel, school administrators, and contractors. The employee is expected to perform work safely and professionally and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, SCPS policies, established maintenance procedures, and the scope of work appropriate to the position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
General Building Maintenance
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repairs throughout district buildings and facilities.
- Inspect buildings, classrooms, common areas, exterior areas, and equipment to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and potential problems.
- Perform general carpentry, including repair and installation of doors, frames, trim, shelving, cabinetry, furniture, hardware, and other building components.
- Repair drywall, ceilings, walls, flooring, and other building surfaces.
- Perform interior and exterior painting and related surface preparation.
- Repair and replace door hardware, locks, closers, hinges, and other building hardware as assigned.
- Assemble, install, relocate, and repair furniture, fixtures, equipment, shelving, and other facility items.
- Perform minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other building systems within the scope of the employee's training and authorization.
- Assist specialized trade personnel with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other maintenance work as directed.
- Perform other general facility repairs and maintenance activities as assigned.
Preventive Maintenance And Inspections
- Participate in district preventive maintenance programs and scheduled inspections.
- Identify deteriorating conditions, equipment issues, water intrusion, structural concerns, and other facility needs and promptly report them to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Assist with routine inspections of buildings, grounds, equipment, playgrounds, and other facilities.
- Help ensure maintenance concerns are addressed before they become larger or more costly problems.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, materials used, and work completed.
Work Orders And Documentation
- Receive and complete assigned work orders in a timely and professional manner.
- Document work performed, materials used, equipment serviced, and follow-up needs in the district's maintenance/work-order system.
- Communicate incomplete work, recurring problems, safety concerns, and recommended repairs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining accurate facility and equipment maintenance records.
Plumbing, Electrical, And Mechanical Support
- Perform minor plumbing repairs, including replacement or repair of fixtures, faucets, drains, valves, and related components, when within the employee's training and authorization.
- Perform minor electrical maintenance activities, such as replacing approved fixtures, switches, receptacles, or other components, when within the employee's training and authorization.
- Assist licensed or specialized maintenance personnel with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical repairs and installations.
- Follow all applicable safety requirements and ensure work outside the employee's scope of training or authorization is referred to the appropriate specialized trade or contractor.
- Report conditions requiring licensed or specialized work to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Grounds And Exterior Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance of school grounds, walkways, exterior structures, fences, athletic areas, and other outdoor facilities as assigned.
- Assist with seasonal grounds maintenance, including storm cleanup, debris removal, snow or ice response, and other weather-related activities.
- Identify and report hazardous conditions involving sidewalks, trees, fencing, drainage, playgrounds, athletic areas, and other exterior facilities.
- Assist with preparation of facilities and grounds for school activities, athletic events, and special events.
Equipment, Tools, And Materials
- Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, grounds equipment, and other maintenance equipment appropriate to assigned duties.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
- Assist with maintaining an organized inventory of maintenance materials, supplies, parts, and equipment.
- Communicate material and supply needs to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Properly use, store, transport, and dispose of paints, chemicals, cleaning products, and other maintenance materials in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
Safety, Compliance, And Quality
- Perform all work in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, building and safety codes, OSHA requirements, and SCPS policies and procedures.
- Follow appropriate lockout/tagout and other safety procedures when working on equipment or systems that present potential hazards.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safe work practices.
- Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work areas during and after maintenance activities.
- Promptly report hazardous conditions, accidents, damaged equipment, or other safety concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Protect students, staff, visitors, buildings, equipment, and district property while performing assigned work.
- Maintain a professional presence when working in occupied school facilities.
Projects And Contractor Support
- Assist with maintenance, renovation, repair, and improvement projects throughout the district.
- Assist specialized trades and contractors with projects as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Help prepare work areas, move materials and equipment, and perform related general maintenance tasks.
- Monitor assigned work areas for cleanliness, safety, and completion of work.
- Report contractor concerns, project issues, or deficiencies to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Emergency And After-Hours Response
- Participate in emergency maintenance response as assigned.
- Assist with storm, snow, flooding, utility interruption, building damage, and other emergency facility needs.
- Respond to urgent maintenance conditions that may affect student or staff safety or the continued operation of a school facility.
- Participate in after-hours, weekend, holiday, or other emergency work when required.
Communication And Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with the Maintenance Supervisor, HVAC Technician, Commercial Electrician, Plumber, custodial personnel, school administrators, and other district employees.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with school administrators, staff, contractors, students, and members of the public when performing work in school facilities.
- Provide timely updates regarding work assignments, facility concerns, and needed follow-up.
- Support a customer-service-oriented maintenance operation focused on safe, clean, functional, and well-maintained schools.
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in professional development and safety training as appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge of current maintenance practices, tools, equipment, and safety requirements.
- Assist other maintenance personnel when workload or emergency conditions require additional support.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Director of Operations.

- Proper handling and storage of maintenance materials and chemicals.
