Head of Assessment

Description The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking a Head of Assessment to lead library assessment and student engagement & success research. They will advise and serve as a resource for library administration including budget & finance planning, grant writing and support, librarian research support, and national & regional engagement. They will also lead special projects as assigned. Essential Duties Leads library assessment and integrates assessment and evidence‑based decision‑making across the Library. Coordinates data collection, storage, processing, and dissemination for decision‑making and reporting. Analyzes and reports quantitative and qualitative data gathered from various sources in the Library and across campus. Collaborates on assessment research projects across the Library and supports assessment‑focused data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings. Explores and communicates new assessment methods, including analysis and data collection to library staff. Provides consultation to library staff on assessment methods including usability testing, data collection and analysis. Participates in the library’s Strategic Planning Committee; creates tools to assist the library in conducting strategic planning; develops and advises on the creation of strategic metrics; and contributes to annual reports relating to annual strategic plan accomplishments. Develops and implements internal training on assessment methods, data collection and analysis, and technologies. Works closely with campus OneIT on business intelligence systems, assessment data storage, and data security. Coordinates the data collection for annual reports, strategic plans, and surveys. Ensures a collegial, team‑oriented work environment. Displays excellent customer service and interpersonal skills when working with patrons and colleagues. Plans for, hires, develops, and manages reporting personnel, including faculty, staff, student assistants, interns, and non‑student temps. Advises and serves as a resource for library administration related to budget/finance planning; grant writing and support; library‑led research activities; and regional and national engagement. Leads special projects as assigned. Minimum Education/Experience Requirements Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. Graduation with a master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position description may be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean. A second master’s in another discipline or an earned doctorate is highly desirable. Preferred Education, Skills and Training Experience A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in an academic library, or equivalent professional experience. Academic coursework or relevant professional experience in statistical methods, qualitative methods, and research design. Documented experience in the development and implementation of assessment strategies in libraries, higher education, or other complex organizations. Experience using a variety of quantitative and qualitative approaches to assessment such as user‑centered design, ethnographic research, usability studies, or evaluation design. Demonstrated ability to perform data analyses and to present complicated information in easy to understand formats, e.g., data visualization, charts, tables, etc. Working knowledge of data visualization and statistical software tools. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience collecting and reporting statistics in a complex organization. Experience with SQL and database structure. Experience in project management. Experience with supporting accreditation efforts in higher education. Experience with national library assessment programs, e.g., LibQUAL+, Project Information Literacy, NSSE, Value of Academic Libraries. Demonstrated proficiency in the competencies identified by ACRL for assessment coordinators. Please note, hiring is subject to budget availability.
