Imaging Support Specialist

Overview Position: Imaging Support Specialist Employment Type: Part time • Shift: Rotating Department: Radiology Admin • Location: Ypsilanti, MI Position purpose: The Imaging Support Specialist works closely with the IRC Coordinator, hospital staff, manager, and physicians to facilitate timely availability of images for interpretation and communication of results to referring physicians across the health system. The role identifies issues with processes, procedures, and systems that negatively impact the workflow and participates in root cause analysis, process improvement, and implementation of changes. The specialist ensures follow-through and closure of patient care related requests and provides information for quality assurance purposes. A variety of clerical duties, including word processing, data entry, typing, completing moderately complex forms, and maintaining records, files, and systems, are performed. Responsibilities Function as a liaison for internal and external departments (e.g., ED, Critical Care Units) radiologists, and referring physicians. Receive and greet customers, patients, and/or employees; direct visitors and deliveries to appropriate areas. Answer routine questions and provide basic information and assistance with departmental procedures. Retrieve, relay, and record critical patient information related to exams and patient care for radiologists, physicians, other departments, and facilities. Update records and files using manual and computerized filing systems, including data entry into spreadsheets. Scan and digitize paperwork and radiology images into multiple computer systems for archival purposes. Perform general clerical duties (copying, errands, maintaining records) and utilize on-call procedures. Apply knowledge of departmental processes to problem solve and contact appropriate parties to ensure continuation of patient care efficiently. Ensure follow-through and closure of information gathering for radiologist interpretation and reporting to the appropriate physician. Act as a point of contact for information requests from other departments, patients, and physicians. Prioritize exams to be read across multiple imaging systems based on urgency and radiologist guidelines; manage all other exams in order received. Assist departmental customers with radiologist consultations and interpretation requests. Monitor prioritization and assist in meeting customer needs, time utilization, and adherence to procedural standards. Distribute requests/exams to the appropriate area; respond to requests for release of images or results. Maintain logs of work activities and provide assistance to on-shift and off-shift radiologists as needed. Utilize PACS web, PACS, RadNet, Powerchart, Powerscribe, Intelerad, and other relevant systems to support physicians and radiologists. Investigate and recommend improvements when care is delayed due to process breakdown. Answer phones, return pages within 5 minutes to allow radiologists to focus on interpretations; assist in contacting other physicians as needed. Assist in orienting and training new Radiology support staff; maintain clean and organized work and visitor areas. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; related experience preferred. Two to three years of progressively responsible experience in a physician support setting and/or two years in a Radiology Department. Problem-solving skills and the ability to initiate creative solutions. Effective communication with medical staff, departmental staff, and other health care professionals. Knowledge of Windows-based programs and familiarity with PACS, PACS web, RADNET, PowerChart, PowerScribe, Intelerad, and related systems after training.
