The County of San Diego invites applications for the position of Supervising Psychiatrist. Interviews will be conducted on an ongoing basis. Reflecting our commitment to attracting and retaining top talent, candidates selected for this classification are hired at the highest step $ 358,092.80 within the salary range. Future salary increases employees in this job class are scheduled to receive across-the-board increases and market increases: July 2027 - 4.49% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + 1.49% Market Increase). In addition to base salary, candidates may be compensated at an additional 10% for Board Certified Specialty and 5% for relevant sub-specialty.

A Supervising Psychiatrist has full medical and administrative responsibility and authority for the psychiatric and other medical services of particular programs or units. The Supervising Psychiatrist provides high-level clinical leadership, reviews complex cases, offers real-time consultation to psychiatric providers, provides direct client care, and ensures compliance with a growing number of regulatory requirements and expanded state oversight. Positions are located in Behavioral Health Services direct and/or administrative locations.

Ideal candidate:

• Board Certified Psychiatrist
• Has experience in an outpatient, inpatient setting and/or in a correctional setting
• Has experience in providing care to adults with serious mental illness, including co-occurring conditions
• Has significant administrative/managerial experience
• Is flexible and has a collaborative approach in working with a multidisciplinary team
• Is able to oversee and provide direct service coverage at multiple sites/locations
• Has an interest in innovation to provide the highest quality services

Hiring process and timeline:

• Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
• Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
• Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum qualifications required at time of application:

• Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California OR Graduation from a U.S. accredited medical or osteopathic school or certified foreign studies equivalency equivalent to a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) Note: Possession of an ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates) certificate may substitute for the certified foreign studies equivalency.
• AND, Three (3) years of post residency psychiatry experience at the level of Psychiatrist or higher with responsibility for conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnosing, and treating of patients under direct care/supervision and/or patients with mental and emotional disorders, with at least one (1) year of experience directly supervising staff Psychiatrist and/or other licensed medical or mental health professionals.

Minimum qualifications required at time of appointment:

• Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California (if not submitted at time of application)
• Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate
• Valid National Provider Identification Number (NPI)
• Completion of a General Psychiatric residency in an ACGME approved residency program Note: For positions that supervise units working with children, candidate must additionally be a graduate of a fully accredited Child Psychiatry Fellowship.

Condition of employment: As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
