Finance Accountant

Position Title Finance Accountant Department Business Office Reports To Executive Director of Finance Position Summary The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions in support of Moffat County School District RE-1's financial operations. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with governmental accounting standards, and effective support of payroll and accounts payable processes. The position works closely with the Executive Director of Finance and plays a key role in maintaining fiscal integrity across the District. Salary $50,000 - $80,000. Actual placement on the salary schedule is based on experience and education. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist in the preparation, analysis, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and financial statements Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, and Colorado Department of Education reporting requirements Assist in payroll processing, including audits, reconciliations, and reporting Support Accounts Payable functions, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing Monitor and maintain internal controls over financial transactions Assist with annual audit preparation and coordination with external auditors Support budget development, monitoring, and forecasting activities Assist in the preparation of required federal, state, and local financial reports Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to leadership Maintain documentation and ensure audit readiness at all times Provide guidance and support to accounting, payroll, and AP staff Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; equivalent experience will also be considered. Strong understanding of governmental and fund accounting Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience Proficiency in financial software systems and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets Working Conditions Primarily office-based environment Occasional extended hours during audit, payroll dates or budget cycles Ability to sit for extended periods Occasional lifting of office materials up to 50 lbs Benefits PERA retirement, paid time off, and other optional benefit elections.
