Under general supervision, to perform a variety of general maintenance and semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the County facilities, fixtures, and building equipment; and to do related work as required. This classification is a for cause, non-exempt position.
This is the fully experienced working level in the Building Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the County facility, machinery, and equipment. Assignments involve painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC repairs. This class is distinguished from Building Maintenance Worker II in that incumbents work with less guidance and supervision, performing a broader range of assignments which require a higher level of skill in a facility which must be properly maintained and the majority of equipment in working order twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week.
Reports to Building Maintenance Manager; Jail Captain; Assistant Department Head; or other designated Manager. This is not a supervisory class although some work oversight may be provided for Community Service Workers or Inmate Workers depending on the assigned department/area.
Performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the Department or County Jail facilities or and associated equipment; performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work; maintains and repairs electro-pneumatic lock systems, elevator, closed-circuit video surveillance system, potable hot water system; monitors and repairs fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers; checks and maintains generators; may maintains, repairs, and replaces components including electrical motors in commercial kitchen equipment such as dishwasher, stove, refrigeration, garbage disposals, and coffeemaker; replaces broken floor tiles; may designs and fabricates steel hardware for correctional facility usage; assists with inspection of buildings and facilities for needed repairs; prepares and submits cost estimates for projects and modifications; operates hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles; interprets plans, specifications, and technical manuals; maintains extensive inventory of parts and equipment to ensure a quick response rate to equipment breakdowns and emergencies; may oversee Community Service Workers and Inmate Workers.
Knowledge of: Safety practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the building trades. Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment and systems. Electrical wiring and power systems. Hot water, plumbing, and sanitary waste systems. Electro-pneumatic lock systems. Elevator repair. Commercial kitchen equipment maintenance and repair. Fire detection and suppression systems. Closed circuit video surveillance systems.
Desired Skills: Perform a variety of general maintenance, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the County jail facilities and associated equipment. Read and understand plans, construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical manuals. Recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance r. Use and care for hand and power tools used in building and equipment maintenance and repair. Estimate time and materials for maintenance assignments. Make basic mathematical calculations. Follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying. A typical way, but not required, to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Two to three years of building maintenance experience comparable to that of a Building Maintenance Worker II with Siskiyou County.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid and appropriate driver's license. For Jail Building Maintenance: Critical components within the jail must be maintained in operating condition twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week. Incumbents are subject to call-back during emergency situations when vital equipment breaks down. Incumbents in this classification must pass a routine background check upon accepting an offer of employment and submit to a pre-employment physical examination.
Typical Physical Requirements: Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; ability to walk in uneven terrain and on slippery surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to crawl through various areas requiring movement on hands and knees; ability to climb, stoop, crouch, and kneel; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; perform sustained physical work; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX; operate an automobile; use hand tools and power equipment.
Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in building and outdoor environments; work is performed in varying temperatures; exposure to dust, chemicals, and gases; exposure to electrical currents; continuous contact with other staff and jail inmates.
