Certification Specialist for HVAC

Job Summary CSA Group has an opportunity for a Certification Specialist – HVAC who has a strong knowledge of the HVAC industry requirements and has substantial experience in the related product standards, including but not limited to UL 60335-2-40 Household and Similar Electrical Appliances – Safety – Part 2-40 Fourth Edition: Particular Requirements for Electrical Heat Pumps, Air Conditioners and Dehumidifiers. This role will provide high quality certification, testing and field evaluation services that meet the clients' needs in the most efficient and effective manner possible while ensuring safe products are available in the public marketplace. The position will also work closely with the Principal Technical Lead to develop training, assess staff technical expertise and related standard development activities. It involves making technical decisions based on a high degree of knowledge, training and experience in certification and testing to maintain the integrity of CSA's global certification programs. Responsibilities Efficiently manage certification projects concurrently and ensure completion within time frames and cost deadlines to generate specified revenue targets. Evaluate products against the requirements of national/international standards and precedent decisions. Handle a wide spectrum of projects, including those that are complex and generate high revenue levels. Maintain very high productivity while managing multiple projects with on‑time and on‑budget performance. Actively look for efficiencies (continual improvement) and demonstrate changes made to laboratory operations that have delivered productivity gains year on year. Identify and seek approval for the development of new or improved evaluation processes, standards interpretations and forms & templates. Identify and seek approval for the development of new or improved test facilities, including laboratory equipment and procedures. Review test data, reports and authorize the application of the CSA Mark; prepare Certification Reports and Certificates of Compliance. Participate in CSA Technical Network and Technical Panel as required and support international standards development. Serve as a technical authority inside CSA and across the industry, evidenced by participation in technical committees and authoring technical papers. Conduct manufacturer facility assessments for CPC and SMTC programs. Conduct construction evaluations, ensuring the unit complies with the construction section of the standard, and identify rationale for compliance or non‑compliance. Collaborate with the Lab Technician to create a work order for required tests and determine the number of samples needed. Evaluate products at the customer facility, witness tests performed by the customer, evaluate construction, review customer test methods, ensure all test equipment is within guidelines, and provide technical briefings on existing requirements. Evaluate and qualify companies in the administration of the CSA Category Certification Program, CSA Shared Program or other agency programs; review customer test methods and designs, ensure all test equipment and quality procedures are within guidelines, provide training, technical briefings, and authorize application or removal of the CSA Mark. Provide technical information services to external and internal customers; liaise with customers in the design stage to ensure national/international standards requirements are met without compromising confidentiality. Act as a back‑up for the Technical Advisor, provide technical support and specialized training, and ensure technical consistency. Develop certification practices to solve technical problems involving new technology. Provide technical guidance and training; answer inquiries regarding standards and legal requirements. Act as a Notified Body representative or Reviewer to support certification decisions or issuance of approvals. May be qualified to perform CB Report reviews and conduct Category Audits. Keep the Product Group Manager / Lead or Assistant Operations Manager informed of project status, pointing out major problems and non‑compliance. Accountable for including the Technical Advisor or Certifiers in product/technical discussions unique to CSA or to the individual’s experience, aiding consistency of practices and front‑end guidance. Make field trips and perform test work at manufacturer facilities as required. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with registration as a Professional Engineer, with likely six or more years of work experience in a similar industry and/or three years at the qualified level, OR a College Diploma in a relevant technological discipline, with likely six or more years of work experience in a similar industry and/or three years at the qualified level. Knowledge of CSA, UL and IEC standards and a variety of test procedures specific to the HVAC area. Specific knowledge of and substantial experience with UL 60335-2-40 Fourth Edition. Knowledge of CSA programs and services. Leadership and management skills. Computer proficiency (word processing) and keyboarding. Strong problem‑solving ability and detail‑oriented. Strong organizational, time, and project management skills. Ability to work unsupervised. High level of communication skills (verbal and written).
