Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Emergency Medicine

Job Description Summary MUSC’s Department of Emergency Medicine is looking for a PA or APRN to join its team of Advanced Practice Providers. Incumbent will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services for direct patient care in the Adult Emergency Departments in the Main University Hospital and Ashley River Tower, as delegated by the Emergency Medicine physician. Job Type This is a PRN (As Needed) Position. Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt. Hours per week: Variable. Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 430 clinical hours per year (0.25 FTE), comprised of 10-hour shifts including nights and weekends. Patient Population Focus: Emergency Department Management. Age Range: 13 years to death. Required Minimum Training Physician Assistant: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant. APRN: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN. Preferred Training Physician Assistant. APRN: AGACNP or ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner); FNP with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner Certification; AGPNP/ANP with current Emergency Room Nurse Practitioner Certification. Preferred Experience Minimum of 1 year experience as a PA or APRN in an Emergency Department setting or completion of an Emergency Medicine Fellowship/Residency. Degree of Supervision Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC. Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations Basic Life Support (BLS). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required for adult inpatient positions. DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day. Preferred Licensure, Certifications, Registrations Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) as required by our Level I Trauma Center. Job Duties Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations. Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline. Performs therapeutic procedures including: Administration of Local and Digital Anesthesia Complicated and Uncomplicated Repair of Lacerations Removal of Foreign Bodies from Eyes, Ears, Nose, Skin, and Wounds Trepanation of Subungual Hematomas Incision and Drainage of Abscesses Urethral Catheterization Placement of Peripheral Venous Access Placement of Central Lines (with proof of competency) Placement of Thoracostomy Endotracheal Intubation (with proof of competency) ACLS procedures Arterial Puncture Venipuncture Lumbar Puncture (with proof of competency) Application of Splints Arthrocentesis Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician. Documents and bills for direct care provided. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice. Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research. Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization. Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members. Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law. Physical Requirements Continuous requirements to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.
