Programmer

POSITION SUMMARY
The Programmer I independently develops and manages machine programs for laser cutting equipment and is
actively building competency in punch and combination machine programming. This role requires solid CAM
software skills, the ability to read engineering drawings, and a working understanding of sheet metal fabrication
processes. The Programmer I manages assigned laser programming projects with minimal direction and serves as
a developing technical contributor on the programming team.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Independently develop, test, and manage programs for laser cutting machines using CAM software.
• Review engineering drawings, job packets, and material specifications to ensure programming accuracy
before jobs reach the floor.
• Perform nesting optimization to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap.
• Actively develop punch machine programming skills under the direction of the Programming Supervisor.
• Collaborate with operators to verify program performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrections.
• Maintain organized digital program libraries and revision control records.
• Communicate with production, planning, and engineering teams to keep jobs moving on schedule.
• Participate in process improvement initiatives and contribute observations from daily programming work.
• Support onboarding of Entry Programmers as directed by the Programming Supervisor.
• Follow all safety policies, quality standards, and production floor procedures.
WHAT YOU BRING
• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification in a manufacturing-related field
preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to independently program laser cutting machines in a sheet metal fabrication
environment.
• Proficiency with CAM software; experience with Amada VPSS, BySoft, or similar platforms preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
• Strong computer proficiency including file management and digital workflow systems.
• Mechanical aptitude with a working understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes.
• Effective communication skills with operators, engineers, and production personnel.
• Minimum 1 year of programming or manufacturing experience, or demonstrated competency through
structured development.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Must be able to move between office and production floor environments throughout the shift.
• Must be able to sit at a workstation for extended periods when performing programming or engineering
tasks.
• Must be able to stand and walk on the shop floor for extended periods as operational support requires.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach at production work centers as floor support activities require.
• Must be able to safely handle and lift parts, materials, or equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.
• Must be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements including operating a keyboard and
computer equipment throughout the workday.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role operates in a combination of office and shop floor settings within a precision sheet metal fabrication
environment. Office work involves computer-based programming, design, and documentation tasks. Shop floor
conditions include exposure to production machinery, moderate noise, and varying temperatures. Personal
protective equipment is required and provided when on the production floor.
