Accounting Manager (Controller Track)

Compensation: $115,000 - $135,000 annually

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager who is ready to take on increasing leadership responsibilities and grow into a Controller role as the organization continues to evolve.

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager is a key member of the finance leadership team and will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance activities, and internal control processes. This role offers a clear path to advancement into a Controller position, making it an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional seeking long-term career growth.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, leadership capability, and experience working in complex financial environments involving insurance, risk-sharing arrangements, self-insurance programs, or similarly regulated industries.

Working closely with executive leadership, this individual will help ensure accurate financial reporting, support strategic decision-making, and strengthen the organization's financial infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
• Prepare accurate financial statements and management reports.
• Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and related accounting activities.
• Monitor accruals, reserves, and other financial estimates in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
• Analyze financial results and identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
• Assist in developing executive and board-level financial reporting packages.
• Provide coaching, guidance, and oversight to accounting staff.

Insurance and Program Accounting

• Manage premium, contribution, or program revenue accounting activities.
• Reconcile participant or member accounts and monitor collections.
• Account for risk-transfer arrangements, excess coverage premiums, recoverables, and related transactions.
• Coordinate with claims administrators, service providers, and consultants to ensure accurate financial reporting.
• Support reserve analyses and related financial reconciliations.

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

• Coordinate annual financial statement audits and serve as a primary contact for external auditors.
• Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and reconciliations.
• Ensure compliance with accounting standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Support preparation of annual tax filings and informational returns.
• Recommend and implement enhancements to internal controls and accounting procedures.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

• Partner with finance leadership on annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Prepare cash flow projections and financial planning analyses.
• Assist with strategic financial initiatives and operational decision support.
• Provide analysis related to program performance, pricing, and organizational growth opportunities.

Systems & Process Improvement

• Administer accounting systems and recommend process enhancements.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and technology.
• Maintain investment and treasury-related accounting records.
• Participate in software implementations, upgrades, and integrations.
• Help build scalable accounting processes to support organizational growth.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
• Five or more years of progressive accounting experience.
• At least three years of experience in insurance, risk management, employee benefits, financial services, self-insurance, or another highly regulated environment.
• Experience preparing financial statements and supporting external audits.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and modern accounting software platforms.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred

• CPA designation or active pursuit of CPA licensure.
• Experience within insurance pools, captive insurance programs, risk-sharing organizations, or self-insured structures.
• Familiarity with reserve accounting, actuarial reporting, or claims-related financial processes.
• Experience in nonprofit, association, member-based, or mission-driven organizations.
• Prior supervisory or team leadership experience.
• Experience implementing financial systems, reporting tools, or process improvement initiatives.
