Our Power Markets team partners with investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, and independent power producers to support generation and power supply planning decisions backed by rigorous engineering, economic, and market analysis. As part of Burns & McDonnell, we bring together deep industry expertise, technical excellence, and practical insight to help clients make informed, defensible decisions that shape their long-term power supply strategies.We’re seeking a Project Manager within our Power Markets team who brings strong technical grounding, project leadership capability, and client-facing experience. This role is ideal for a seller-doer who enjoys leading multidisciplinary teams, managing complex consulting engagements, and helping clients address critical power supply and market-related challenges.What You’ll DoAs a Project Manager, you will lead all phases of power market and power supply planning engagements, from business development through project execution. You will manage scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client relationships while guiding teams of engineers and analysts to deliver actionable, high-quality results. You will also contribute to the growth and development of the Power Markets practice through mentoring and business development activities.Key responsibilities include:Business DevelopmentCultivate and grow client relationships through marketing efforts, project interactions, and strategic engagement.Identify and pursue new sales opportunities with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and developers.Lead proposal development, project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling activities.Set critical project objectives with clients and lead contract development and negotiations.Project ExecutionManage the full lifecycle of power supply and power market planning projects including scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client communication.Lead risk assessment processes and procedures using industry best practices.Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams of engineers, consultants, and analysts.Communicate project status, risks, and costs to stakeholders and executive leadership.Leadership & MentorshipTrain and mentor junior staff on both technical and project management aspects of power supply and market planning.Champion internal initiatives that promote team growth and technical excellence.Serve as a go-to technical expert in power market and power supply planning and evaluation.Technical ResponsibilitiesLead and oversee consulting studies supporting generation and power supply planning decisions, including integrated resource planning (IRP), market assessments, power supply RFP evaluations, and generation portfolio analyses.Support client decisions related to new generation construction, facility retirements, retrofits, conversions, and power purchase agreements.Guide the application of power market and power supply planning models and tools to evaluate cost, risk, and performance impacts.Integrate engineering, economic, and market considerations into clear, defensible recommendations.Present technical findings and recommendations to clients in a clear, concise, and actionable manner.Preferred Experience & SkillsThe following experience and skills are preferred and reflect power market–specific capabilities relevant to this role:Experience supporting electric utilities or power market participants with power supply planning, market analysis, or integrated resource planning studies.Working knowledge of power supply planning and market simulation tools such as PROMOD (zonal and nodal), capacity expansion models, or similar platforms (e.g., PLEXOS, EnCompass, GridView).Understanding of electric power supply options, including generation technologies, capital and operating cost structures, dispatch behavior, and general power system operations.Familiarity with power purchase agreements, including cost structures, terms, and key risk considerations.Knowledge of electric utility systems, generation portfolios, and the role of power markets in long-term planning decisions.Experience applying financial and economic analysis techniques such as discounted cash flow, net present value, and internal rate of return in support of planning decisions.Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary teams of engineers and analysts.Strong project management skills, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, and financial performance management.Ability to work directly with clients to understand their needs and translate them into effective scopes of work and project approaches.QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering, economics, computer science, data science or similar field from an ABET accredited program.Or master's degree in engineering, economics, computer science, data science, or business is preferred.Minimum 5 years of related experience; working for, or providing consulting services to, electric utilities, including 3 or more years managing engineering or consulting projects.Strong knowledge of power supply planning software, preferably PROMOD (zonal and nodal) and Capacity Expansion (or familiarity with Plexos, EnCompass, GridView, or others).Extensive knowledge of electric power options including generation facility types, capital costs, operating costs, typical dispatch profiles, and general power system operations. Knowledge of power supply purchase agreements regarding costs and terms.Deep and broad base of knowledge of electric utility systems, power generation types, and power delivery with an understanding of power generation portfolio planning.General business and financial calculation knowledge, including discounted cash flow analysis, net present value analysis, and internal rate of return evaluations.Proven ability to lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts in regard to power supply planning studies.Proven ability to lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and analysts.General business and financial calculation knowledge.Effective Project Management skills.Ability to work with existing and new clients to identify new projects, articulate to the clients our ability to perform those projects and translate that into the sale of consulting services.Ability to communicate with various business contacts to understand their needs and translate them into a scope of work that meets their desired outcomes.Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines and to be effective in on-site work environments.Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.Ability to focus on the big picture to effectively and efficiently provide services that meet client needs, while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.Willingness to learn new service offerings as client needs and the market requires changes to the service offerings provided by our group.Willingness and ability to develop a broad set of service offering types to allow for flexibility to go where the work is.Willingness to cross-sell other services offered by Burns & McDonnell outside the project manager’s core set of services.Willingness to negotiate with clients for new service agreements.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).Must have the ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of industry, government, and public contracts on project-related matters.Excellent written & verbal communication skills.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to travel.Job Field: EngineeringJob Type: ExperiencedSchedule: Full-timeTravel: Yes, 15 % of the Time
