Competent in non-medicated therapy (chest physiotherapy, positive expiratory pressure). Capable of performing arterial punctures. Skilled in the analysis of blood for blood gases and electrolytes. Proficient in oximetry monitoring and studies. Experienced in medical gas administration. Competent in pulmonary function and other diagnostic tests. Skilled in patient assessment. Experienced in airway management. Description: The certified respiratory therapist assesses, treats, and monitors patients with respiratory diseases and conditions. This includes the delivery of medicated and non-medicated therapy as ordered by the provider. Additionally, therapists provide invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support for acute respiratory failure. As part of patient assessment and management, the therapist performs diagnostic test procedures. Therapists assist in departmental operations by contributing to quality improvement projects, equipment, and supplies. The certified therapist follows all applicable rules and regulations established by the licensure board depending on the state in which respiratory therapy is practiced. Therapists respond to emergency situations throughout the facility, including code blue and rapid response situations. They provide appropriate patient support in high-risk delivery situations, including care of the compromised newborn. They perform airway management, including care and maintenance of endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes. Therapists assess and monitor patients on invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support, adjusting parameters as ordered. They perform and/or assist with advanced specialty procedures such as endotracheal tube insertion, arterial line, and bronchoscopy. Therapists perform provider-prescribed medicated therapy including small volume nebulizer and meter dose inhaler, utilizing safe medication administration standards. They perform provider-prescribed therapeutic procedures such as chest physiotherapy, oscillating positive expiratory pressure, and positive expiratory pressure. Therapists provide oxygen therapy, adjusting as appropriate for patient needs and provider orders. They complete patient assessments and provide appropriate recommendations to providers. They provide education on therapy, respiratory disease, and medications to patients and significant others. Specially trained and competent therapists complete pulmonary function testing as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures. They also complete neurodiagnostic studies such as electroencephalogram as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures. Therapists complete cardiac testing such as 12-lead electrocardiogram and Holter monitoring. They perform arterial and capillary blood gas sampling. They analyze and interpret laboratory tests such as blood gases. They complete and document oximetry studies. Therapists document patient assessment, therapy, and other pertinent patient information in the medical record. They provide pertinent patient information for ongoing care and shared decision-making. Therapists educate peers and students. They participate in situational debriefs. They participate in ongoing departmental and facility processes such as quality improvement, risk, and safety. They attend and participate in departmental meetings and communicate with leadership about concerns, issues, and events. Additionally, therapists clean and prepare equipment for use and ensure proper functioning of departmental analyzers. They evaluate and communicate equipment or supply needs.
