Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). OFMR provides the full range of building services through eight maintenance and operational zones. Individual Occupational Requirements Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study – safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. Experience: Specialized Experience – Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Certificates: Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5. Applicants may also qualify for higher grade levels based on their education and/or experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education listed below. GS‑11 – Experience You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Assisting in conducting safety inspections to determine compliance with regulations and standards; Assisting in investigating accidents and interviewing employees and supervisors about safety and occupational health issues; Preparing reports of findings and recommendations; Presenting safety training programs. GS‑11 – Education Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. GS‑11 – Combination of Education and Experience Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. GS‑12 – Experience You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: Conducting safety inspections to determine compliance with regulations and standards and providing technical advice; Writing and conducting Occupational Safety and Health training; Investigating accidents and interviewing employees and supervisors about safety and occupational health issues and preparing corresponding reports; Assisting in the development and management of safety programs; Managing medical surveillance compliance (respiratory protection, hearing conservation program, etc.).
