Hospital Assistant 2

Job Summary Provide support to clinical staff and supervisors to promote patient care by performing a wide range of tasks and assignments, including assisting patients with activities of daily living, monitoring and observation, transport, documentation, answering phones and doors, and other clerical duties. When assigned to the front desk area, provide minimal essential coverage of reception, patient registration, and medical record services under the direction of a supervisor or the Director of Clinical Operations. This includes routine activities of monitoring the front desk and lobby entrances as well as variable tasks that may differ in volume and nature. Key Responsibilities Direct/Indirect Patient Care – For inpatient services: making rounds, observing patients in seclusion and/or restraints, assisting with hygiene, monitoring meals, escorting to appointments, taking vital signs, obtaining/transporting specimens, providing laundry assistance or retrieving personal belongings, managing assaultive situations, communicating with patients, participating in groups with rehabilitation therapy staff; documenting rounds, seclusion/restraint checks, nutritional intake, vital signs, intake and output, calorie count, activity level, and reporting observations and abnormal findings to the RN. For outpatient services: assisting with patient intake and discharge/exit services, and providing clerical administrative support for medical records. Administrative Support and Patient Registration – Answering phones and doors, stocking supplies, stamping charts, completing lab slips, scheduling appointments, initiating varied paperwork, clerical support such as calendaring and copying, registering admissions, verifying eligibility, obtaining authorization codes, notifying insurance agencies, completing admission documents in Apex and Psych Consult, escorting admissions to the unit, assisting Unit nurses and staff with patient valuables, paging Officer of the Day, running emergency errands to pharmacy, laboratory, Moffitt/Long hospitals or other destinations as directed. Other – Maintain cleanliness of emergency equipment and perform other duties as assigned. Living PRIDE Standards Demonstrate service excellence by following the Everyday PRIDE Guide and UCSF Medical Center standards for communication and behavior, including personal appearance, greeting patients and families, using AIDET, managing up, addressing service recovery, handling delays, phone standards, electronic communication, teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and competency. Use effective communication skills with patients and staff; demonstrate proper telephone etiquette; escort patients or family members needing directions; show sensitivity to cultural differences; exhibit teamwork and recognize colleagues; model and teach Living PRIDE standards. Exhibit tact and professionalism in difficult situations according to PRIDE Values and Practices. Adhere to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to PHI or other sensitive information. Adhere to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Assume accountability for improving unit quality metrics and meeting organizational targets. Work Environment Keep work areas neat, orderly, and clutter‑free; adhere to cleaning processes and return items to their designated places; report broken equipment and furniture. Pick up and dispose of litter throughout the facility. Post flyers and posters only in designated areas; do not post on walls, doors, or windows. Know the location of the Environment of Care Manual and report unsafe conditions to appropriate departments. Protect the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft. Other Functions and Responsibilities Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications High School graduation and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience working in an acute care and/or psychiatric hospital setting. CNA Certification. Current nursing student who has completed a rotation in an inpatient hospital. Flexibility in relation to patient assignment, shift, and work assignment. Required Licenses/Certifications Active American Heart Association CPR certification. CPI Training within 6 months of hire.
