Advanced Practitioner Provider Manager (Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant)-Ambulatory Oncology Mount Sinai Hospital
The Advanced Practice Nursing Manager is responsible for coordination, and assurance of comprehensive health care using advanced practice nursing process and pertinent standards of care, the diagnosis of illness and physical conditions, performance of diagnostic, therapeutic, corrective and prescriptive measures in collaboration with appropriate specialty and site-based physicians. The APN Manager is responsible for delivering operational leadership to Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in inpatient and ambulatory setting fostering clinical integration, optimizing workflows and supporting excellence in advanced practice care.
The APN Manager supervises and directs a designated group of advanced practice nurses within distinct specialty areas of practice. These APNs may diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition within their specialty area of practice. Specialty areas may include but not limited to: Acute Care; Adult Health; College Health; Community Health; Family Health; Gerontology; Holistic Nursing; Neonatology; Obstetrics and Gynecology; Oncology; Palliative Care; Pediatrics; Perinatology; Psychiatry; School Health; and Women's Health. The Advanced Practice Nursing Manager supervises the optimization of APN clinical practice within a service line for the delivery of health care to patients while promoting a culture of patient-centered care that emphasizes service and compassion. Serves as a liaison to nursing, medicine, department chairs/chiefs, care management, administration, and other department leadership. Ensures APNs meet institutional compliance with regulatory agencies.
The APN Manager is responsible for overseeing administrative operations related to designated Physician Assistants (PAs), including workflow optimization and scheduling. While the APN Manager provides leadership in administrative domains, clinical oversight and accountability for PA practice remain under the purview of the designated MD supervisor and PA lead.
Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Assess the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination.
- Initiate selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribe medication regimens, interpret findings and alter plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines.
- Educate and counsel in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses.
- Document findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record.
- Consult with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Initiate referrals to specialty services and foster continuity of care.
- Participate in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
- Perform a patient record review with the collaborating physician in a timely fashion but not less than every three months if utilizing a collaborative practice agreement.
- Practice as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and the bylaws of the Hospital Staff.
- Maintain current expertise in area of practice
Administrative
- Collaborate with the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) and Chair or Service Chief of the respective clinical department in the recruitment, retention, and human resource management of APPs assigned to respective service.
- Evaluate APN staff performance, mentor, coach, counsel and discipline staff up to and including termination.
- Manage, guide and monitor APNs and interdisciplinary team members (including PAs) related to scheduling, assignments, and coordination of services.
- Prepare, implement and monitor budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals.
- Maintain control of established positions and manage the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
- Conduct regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures.
- Facilitate the on-boarding and orientation as well as ongoing professional development of nurse practitioners.
- Coordinate clinical activities of APNs to accomplish established safety and quality measures.
- Provide leadership and develop effective team building.
- Set departmental goals in collaboration with division chief and other key personnel.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to service excellence; role model Mount Sinai Service Standards.
- Participate in relevant hospital-wide committees.
- Act as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient areas to assure continuity of care.
- Review FPPE/OPPE of Advanced Practice Nurses on the assigned service.
- Engage with collaborating physicians, division chief and department administrators to ensure that clinical practice, systems are supportive of clinical care.
- Promote utilization of APNs to optimize their scope of clinical practice.
Professional Practice
- Support and role model the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of the Department of Nursing, the institution of practice and the MSHS.
- Promote own professional growth and development in clinical and managerial role.
- Participate in the development and monitoring of patient outcomes per established practice protocols for purposes of quality and performance improvement.
- Serve as a clinical role model and resource to the nursing and clinical staff.
- Serve as a professional resource to other members of the health care team.
- Use evidence-based health care literature to advise and support appropriate practice changes within the designated service.
- Participate in Service Line Quality and Performance Improvement meetings.
- Participate in APN related meetings and committees.
- Demonstrate professional involvement by: A. Attending and participating in workshops, seminars, and courses as presenter or author. B. Keeping abreast of current literature and trends in practice. C. Participating in related professional organizations.
- Consider ethical issues in professional nursing practice.
- Treat co-workers, patients and families with dignity and respect.
- Maintain attendance and punctuality record in accordance with departmental standards.
- Adhere to dress code in accordance with departmental policy.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Masters degree required from Accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program
- 5+ years minimum of relevant clinical advanced practice
- Previous Advanced Practice leadership and management experience preferred
- Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Current certification and registration as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in New York State
- Current license and registration as a Professional Registered Nurse in NY State (NP candidates)
- National Board Certification from NCCPA or Advanced Practice Nursing required
- DEA Licensure
- BLS, ACLS, and Infection Control Certification
- Credentialed and privileged as a PA or NP
