Optical Fabricator

An Optical Fabricator is a skilled technician who creates precision optics/tooling by utilizing machines, polishing tools, and associated metrology equipment. Essential duties include operating and setting up optical machining centers, independently programming and running a variety of machines, performing grinding and polishing to a high standard using conventional methods, operating core drill, diamond saws, and surfacing mill, and operating inspection equipment such as microscope, micrometers, height gages, Vernier calipers, interferometer, and radius bench. The ability to read and understand both optical and traditional blueprints, possess computer skills, accurately finish spherical and plano laser quality optical elements up to 1/20th wave, and perform cleaning and cosmetic inspection of finished optics according to customer requirements are also required.

Minimum requirements include 2 or more years of Optical CNC machining or equivalent experience, 2 or more years of conventional polishing experience, knowledge of optical lens metrology and measurement equipment, high school diploma or equivalent, basic computer skills, and strong math skills. Qualifications and competencies include the ability to follow directions, good communication skills, analytical troubleshooting/problem solving, decision making, independent work habits, good time management skills, and CNC programming. An AA or BA/BS degree and additional vocational training in manufacturing, materials science, machining, or equivalent are desirable.

Physical demands include standing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms, lifting up to 25lbs, and specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The job may at times involve prolonged periods of sitting/standing, good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and frequent use of the computer. The work environment may involve the use of oils and solvents, exposure to moving mechanical parts and manufacturing fumes, and working at different workstations as production needs require.
