Collections Specialist (Bilingual)

Collections Specialist (Bilingual) Full Time Regular – Houston, TX, US Role The primary role of this position is to be the key partner to our members’ financial journey and to help further the Credit Union’s commitment to strengthening our communities and expanding our current membership. The position delivers high‑quality service to both internal and external members, identifies members’ financial needs, and recommends the most suitable solutions. The specialist controls late and/or delinquent loan accounts, issues pending late payment reminders, and optimizes collections while balancing member goodwill with the credit union’s business interests. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Monitor payments for late and delinquent status, follow up on delinquent, high‑balance, and overdue credit balance accounts by phone and/or letter, maintain accurate files and reports on all collections activity, and update system accounts via the credit union’s delinquency/recovery system. Contact first payment default and Key Start accounts on a daily basis to determine reasons for delinquency and assist members in developing plans to bring accounts to current status. Perform collection activities including securing credit reports, skip tracing loan accounts, processing Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI), maintaining accurate data for repossession logs, bankruptcy files, and charge‑off lists. Prepare documentation for GAP claims, TDRs, and modifications. File all claims, attend hearings, and coordinate with trustees for all bankruptcy filings; testify at legal proceedings as required. Perform other job‑related duties as assigned. Performance Measurements Achieve or exceed established service goals by maintaining member relationships and making at least 100 member contacts daily. Promote and support the Vision, Mission, and Core Values of the CU, ensuring they are carried out by each employee. Maximize the collection and/or recovery of credit union assets from delinquent or charged‑off loans. Maintain accurate and complete records of all collection and recovery activity. Ensure collection activity complies with credit union policy and all relevant regulations, including REG CC, BSA, OFAC, Reg B, Reg Z, and MIP (CIP). Provide courteous, compassionate, professional, and accurate service and support to all members and associates. Knowledge and Skills Experience One to three years of similar or related experience. Education A two‑year college degree Completion of a specialized certification or licensing program Completion of specialized training courses conducted by vendors Job‑specific skills acquired through an apprenticeship program Interpersonal Skills Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and telephone etiquette, with the ability to resolve conflict, build relationships, and secure cooperation confidentially and discreetly. Other Skills Effective communication skills; written, verbal and outstanding telephone etiquette. Physical Requirements Regular standing, sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling, talking, and hearing; vision requirements include close vision and the ability to focus; ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds. Full‑time employees are required to complete 16 hours of volunteerism, and part‑time employees 8 hours. All volunteer time must be approved prior to the event and should benefit or have an impact in Harris County.
