HOME of Va is seeking a Fair Housing Advocate to support individuals who have experienced housing discrimination through direct advocacy, investigation, and community engagement. The Fair Housing Advocate to assist in our fair housing enforcement and investigations efforts throughout the state of Virginia. Job Summary The Fair Housing Advocate advances HOME’s fair housing enforcement and investigations efforts throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this role, the Fair Housing Advocate works directly with individuals who have experienced housing discrimination, advocating on their behalf through negotiation with housing providers and participation in administrative complaint processes, while also contributing to broader advocacy initiatives across the organization. As a member of HOME’s Enforcement and Investigations Team, the Fair Housing Advocate investigates allegations of housing discrimination by coordinating fair housing testing, gathering and analyzing evidence, and developing case findings. The position also provides advice and counseling to clients, supports HOME’s fair housing enforcement efforts, and helps educate the community about fair housing rights. This position is well-suited for someone who is passionate about civil rights, enjoys both direct client work and investigative advocacy, and is eager to contribute to both individual and systemic change. Duties and Responsibilities Assist with intakes from clients alleging housing discrimination, including counseling, advocacy, and making appropriate referrals. Coordinate and lead fair housing investigations throughout Virginia, including research, case development, data analysis and test coordination. Summarize investigative results that leads to actionable next steps. Conduct and coordinate tester training, interviews, debriefings, and test analyses. Conduct trainings in Fair Housing‑related topics for a wide variety of audiences. Participate in community education activities that promote housing opportunities and knowledge of housing rights. Conduct in‑person and virtual interviews of witnesses and serve as a fact witness when necessary. Maintain organized case files and adhere to department protocols for handling evidence; maintain detailed and accurate time records, and case records. Assist with complaint resolution, including drafting and filing administrative complaints on behalf of clients. Maintain a working level of knowledge about housing laws. This includes fair housing, fair lending, consumer protection and landlord‑tenant laws; the theory and practice of fair housing testing; investigations; administrative and legal procedures, remedies, and their application to real‑life situations. Flexibility and willingness to commit to successful completion of assigned tasks, projects and programs. Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend events, as well as occasional travel across the state. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and database tools. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse team. Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a Virginia‑based position, and HOME will provide some relocation assistance for a successful candidate who must move to accept the role.
