Senior Accountant

We are seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team at Northstar Innovations. Northstar Innovations provides operational support for the corporate group underneath Northstar Financial Group Inc., which includes Mainstreet Community Bank, Northstar Bank and West Michigan Community Bank.

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the bank's
financial records. This position is responsible for maintaining general ledger accounts, preparing
financial reports, assisting in month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring compliance
with GAAP, regulatory requirements (e.g. FFIEC, FDIC), and supporting internal and external
audits. The ideal candidate brings strong accounting knowledge, banking industry experience, and
analytical skills to drive financial excellence.

Specific Job Functions & Responsibilities

• Prepare and post journal entries related to various banking activities (loans, deposits, interest income/expense, etc.).
• Review the daily accounting work performed by staff accountants and act as backup to those tasks as needed.
• Manage operational accounting functions, including general ledger accounting, subsidiary ledger accounting, accounts payable, month end and year end accounting for all companies.
• Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Analyze financial data for trends, variances, and discrepancies.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and banking regulations.
• Support external audits, including preparation of audit schedules and documentation.
• Collaborate with departments (e.g. Deposits, Lending, Operations) to ensure accurate accounting of transactions.
• Assist with regulatory filings quarterly.
• Train and mentor junior accounting staff.
• Ensure protection of bank and customer assets through development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures.
• Must complete all required annual training
• Follow required federal and state regulations and related internal policies and procedures.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Strong understanding of GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements for banks.
• Understanding financial data analysis and reporting.
• Proficient in core processing accounting systems (e.g., Jack Henry) and Excel.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines, with strong priority setting skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Education/Experience Required

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CPA candidate strongly preferred).
• 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a financial institution or public accounting with financial clients.
• Experience with bank accounting systems and regulatory software.
• Knowledge of internal control frameworks.
