Position Overview

Southwest LAN Connections is seeking an experienced Lead Structured Cabling Technician to lead installation activities on commercial, industrial, municipal and infrastructure projects primarily throughout the Greater Phoenix area.

This is a hands-on field leadership position.  The Lead Technician will lead and work alongside technicians to install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber-optic cabling while coordinating daily field activities, maintaining project documentation and ensuring that work meets SW LAN quality and safety standards.

SW LAN provides more than traditional structured cabling services.  Our projects may also include wireless access points, point-to-point microwave systems, antennas, grounding, surge protection, and related network infrastructure.  Previous wireless or microwave experience is helpful but is not required.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead and work alongside technicians in the installation, termination, testing and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems.
• Install, terminate, and certify Category 5e, Category 6 and Category 6A copper cabling.
• Install, terminate and test multimode and single-mode fiber-optic cabling.
• Operate Fluke or comparable certification equipment and organize and submit test results.
• Install equipment racks, cabinets, patch panels, fiber enclosures, cable-management systems, J-hooks, ladder tray, and related pathways.
• Review construction drawings, floor plans, cable schedules, specifications, and project scope requirements.
• Direct daily onsite work, assign tasks to field technicians, and coordinate work with project managers, supervisors, technicians, and other trades.
• Monitor workmanship, productivity, material usage, and project progress; promptly address or report issues affecting quality or schedule.
• Maintain accurate cable labels, test results, photographs, redline drawings, daily reports, and completion documentation.
• Identify and promptly report installation conflicts, material shortages, unforeseen field conditions, scope changes, and potential schedule delays.
• Perform quality-control inspections and correct deficiencies before final testing or customer turnover.
• Promote safe work practices, professional communication, job site organization, and high-quality workmanship.
• Train and mentor technicians in installation methods, testing procedures, documentation, and SW LAN workmanship standards.
• Assist with wireless access points, microwave radios, antennas, grounding, and associated copper or fiber cabling when required.

Required Qualifications

• Five or more years of commercial structured cabling experience.
• Previous experience as a lead technician, crew lead, or senior-level field experience that included directing other technicians.
• Strong working knowledge of commercial copper and fiber-optic cabling systems.
• Experience terminating and testing Category 5e, Category 6 and Category 6A cabling.
• Experience installing, terminating, and testing fiber-optic cabling.
• Ability to independently plan field work, organize technicians and complete assigned installation scopes to established quality standards.
• Ability to read construction drawings, floor plans, and cable-routing documents.
• Experience operating copper certification equipment such as Fluke testers, interpreting test results, troubleshooting failures, and submitting organized certification reports.
• Ability to work safely from ladders, aerial lifts, and elevated work platforms.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Reliable transportation to the office or designated project location.
• Current residence in or near the Greater Phoenix area.
• Ability to travel to project locations throughout Arizona, including occasional overnight travel.
• Reliable transportation.

Preferred Experience

The following experience is helpful but not required:

• Fiber fusion splicing or mechanical fiber termination.
• Conduit bending and pathway installation.
• Wireless access-point installation.
• Microwave radio and antenna installation.
• Industrial, municipal, or mining project experience.
• BICSI training or relevant manufacturer training and certifications.
