Advanced Practice Fellow - NICU

Job Overview Advanced Practice Fellow in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The fellowship is a 13‑month program beginning January1,2027, involving clinical work in the NICU and coursework through the Neonatal Program at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. Key Responsibilities Perform complete health assessments, including history and physical examination, and document findings in the medical record. Order, collect, and interpret diagnostic data, and manage diagnostic tests through ordering, performance, and interpretation. Identify risks (medication side effects, immobility, nutrition, fluid/electrolyte imbalance, immunocompetence, invasive interventions, diagnostic procedures) and develop plans to mitigate them. Participate in daily huddles or rounds with the interdisciplinary team, actively collaborating in formulating and evaluating ongoing plan of care. Formulate differential diagnoses, prioritize conditions, and identify appropriate interventions. Create and document individualized, evidence‑based plan of care, prescribing pharmacologic, non‑pharmacologic, and surgical interventions as needed. Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with team members, patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care. Document key patient progress through daily progress notes, transfer and discharge summaries, and clinic notes, ensuring compliance with documentation standards. Provide preceptor/mentoring, education, and instruction to students and nursing staff. Engage in research and evidence‑based practice analysis, attend Grand Rounds, AP Council meetings, faculty and unit meetings, and pursue continuing education to maintain licensure and certification. Qualifications Master’s degree in nursing, physician assistant program, or comparable field. Less than 1 year of relevant work experience. Certification in neonatal advanced practice nursing or physician assistant (preferred). Demonstrated knowledge of evidence‑based practice, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, and timely, compliant documentation.
