Principal Engineer

Position Principal Engineer – Land and Property Development Responsibilities Lead the Land and Property Development Division, providing efficient engineering services to support private development projects during entitlement, design, and construction phases. Coordinate, facilitate, and permit a high‑profile, multi‑year, multi‑billion‑dollar development partnership with Related Santa Clara, overseeing construction on City property. Review and approve encroachment permits, easement dedications, street/easement abandonments, subdivision maps, processing encroachment agreements, and collect development‑related fees. Serve as the division’s customer service contact at the City’s permit center. Supervise engineering staff, prepare and monitor the budget, oversee projects and consultants, manage contractor performance, maintain the project database, conduct community outreach, and present project updates to City committees, commissions, and Council. Ensure all projects are implemented in accordance with plans, specifications, and standards. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution. Five (5) years of increasingly responsible civil engineering office and field work, including at least three years after registration and two years in a supervisory capacity. Alternatively, five years of increasingly responsible experience as a Senior Engineer with the City of Santa Clara. Valid California State Board registration as a Civil Engineer. Professional Land Surveyor license in California is highly desirable. Other certifications such as Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP) or Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) are desirable. Registration & Licensure Valid California Civil Engineer registration required. Professional Land Surveyor license preferred. Valid Class C California driver’s license required at application and throughout employment.
