New Roots Institute is a growing nonprofit dedicated to ending factory farming by empowering the next generation of advocates. Our fellowship programs train students to lead real-world campaigns that create structural and behavioral change in their communities. 

We’re seeking a passionate and experienced Recruitment and Outreach Manager to join our team and help deepen our impact. As Recruitment and Outreach Manager, you’ll lead New Roots Institute’s high-touch, relationship-based recruitment efforts, helping us build talented, motivated, and diverse cohorts of fellows. You’ll serve as an outward-facing ambassador for New Roots, identifying and engaging promising prospective applicants, cultivating partnerships with educators and organizations, and generating excitement about our programs. Through personalized outreach and consistent follow-up, you’ll guide prospects from initial identification and interest through application. As the first person to hold this role, you’ll establish our relationship-based recruitment function, building the partnerships, strategies, and systems needed to expand our reach while personally leading outreach and prospect cultivation.

How You’ll Make an Impact

• Lead New Roots Institute’s high-touch, relationship-based recruitment efforts, building a strong pipeline of high-potential high school and university students and supporting prospective applicants from initial engagement through application.

• Build the foundational systems and processes for this new function, including how New Roots identifies and prioritizes prospects, tracks relationships and follow-up, manages recruitment partnerships, and evaluates results.

• Develop and execute targeted outreach strategies to meet recruitment goals and engage priority audiences, including researching and building prospect lists, conducting direct outreach, meeting with students and student groups, leading information sessions, engaging campus communities, and attending conferences and other recruitment events.

• Cultivate priority prospects by helping them understand New Roots Institute’s programs, addressing questions and barriers, and supporting qualified candidates in deciding whether to apply.

• Build and sustain recruitment partnerships with schools, educators, university staff, student organizations, movement organizations, and other groups that can connect New Roots with strong prospective applicants.

• Activate fellows, alumni, staff, and other ambassadors to identify and engage prospective applicants.

• Use recruitment and admissions data to evaluate pipeline strength, prospect conversion, applicant quality, and the effectiveness of different outreach channels and investments.

• Support the admissions process during high-volume periods by reviewing and processing applications and conducting applicant interviews and welcome calls.

What We’re Looking For

Required Skills & Experience

• Experienced in relationship-based recruitment, outreach, or sales. You have significant experience in recruitment, organizing, outreach, sales, partnership development, or another function focused on identifying, engaging, and cultivating people. You know how to build a strong pipeline, move prospects from initial awareness to meaningful engagement and action, and turn outreach efforts into measurable results. 

• Strong at building relationships and cultivating prospects. You can establish trust with prospective applicants, educators, student leaders, university staff, and community and movement organizations. You understand what motivates different people, communicate the value of an opportunity, address barriers, and provide thoughtful follow-up without making interactions feel transactional.

• Strategic and highly hands on. You can translate recruitment goals into clear outreach priorities, plans, systems, and actions. You are equally comfortable doing the detailed work of researching prospects, building lists, and updating records.

• An organized and dependable project leader. You can manage multiple outreach strategies and relationships, coordinate effectively across teams, navigate competing priorities, and ensure plans and follow-up are carried through to completion.

• A strong communicator and collaborator. You communicate clearly in writing, one-on-one conversations, and group presentations. You adapt your approach to different audiences and collaborate effectively with Admissions, Marketing & Communications, fellows, alumni, and external partners.

• Analytical and systems-oriented. You use data and systems thinking to understand pipeline performance, identify root causes, evaluate recruitment channels and tradeoffs, and improve results over time.

• Proactive and accountable for results. You anticipate challenges, take initiative without waiting for direction, monitor progress honestly, seek support when needed, and adjust your approach when results fall short.

• Willingness and ability to travel periodically within the US, as appropriate, as the recruitment function develops. This may include conferences, campus visits, and other recruitment opportunities.

Other Requirements

• Shared vegan and anti-speciesist values. No one on our team consumes animals or animal products or believes that non-human animals can ethically be treated as resources for human use.

• Ability to commit to attending the annual in-person team meeting, which typically takes place during the first full week of June (Monday through Friday).

Compensation and Benefits 

This is a full-time, remote position with a salary of $80,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, and unlimited PTO.
