DEFINITIONPiedmont Recreation Department is seeking coaches our youth running program. In conjunction with coaching, the role of our Youth Running Coach is character development and leading student athletes so that they may achieve a high level of appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our coaches embrace the mission and philosophy of the Piedmont Recreation Department to support the development of the young runners and the position requires thoughtful and respectful interactions with students, fellow coaches, staff, parents, and other community members.Piedmont Junior Running is an afterschool program offered by the Piedmont Recreation Department and meets at each of Piedmonts three elementary schools twice a week during the school year. Our Junior Running coaches provide students with a safe and healthy afterschool option for 4th and 5th grade families. Junior Running coaches develop lesson plans, meet with fellow coaches and program administrators. Applicants must be available Mondays between 2:20 – 4:30 pm and Wednesdays between 1:30 – 3:30 pm to be considered for the position. Availability for further work such as events, practice planning and administration is preferred. Junior Running coaches typically work 6 – 10 hours per week. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCEAs Rec Leader I (Assistant Coach) - equivalent to the completion of the 11th grade and some experience working/volunteering in a childcare or recreation program. As Rec Leader II (Head Coach) - High School graduate or GED, 2 years of experience working in childcare, youth sports or recreation programing.EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)Follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of the Piedmont Recreation Department.Assist or lead in the creation of practice plans.Organize and facilitate track and cross-country meets.Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development for players of all abilities, getting them ready for the next level of competition.Ensure that program rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.Consult with the administrators regarding scheduling dates for practices, parent informational meetings and other events throughout the season.Attend informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and community.OTHER DUTIESAttends staff development meetings and training courses, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal and Sports Coordinator or other appropriated administrators.SUPERVISION RECEIVEDSports Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust possess mobility to work in a sports facility setting and use equipment. Strength is needed to lift and carry recreation equipment weighing up to 20 pounds for extended periods of time; and flexibility to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Must be able to jog at a slow pace for up to 20 mins. May involve significant standing, walking, pushing, bending and/or pulling to participate in recreation activities. Visual acuity sufficient to perform essential functions of the position. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTSEmployees work in a sports facility setting with loud to moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions. Employees may interact with challenging staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Applicants should also exhibit patience, maturity, and dependability. Have good organizational skills. Possess a positive coaching philosophy, as well as excellent communication and organizational skills.WORKING CONDITIONSSchedule will vary between 6 - 10 hours per week. There will be occasional weekend work as well as trainings and meetings you will be asked to attend.COMPENSATIONAs Rec Leader I (Assistant Coach): $16 - $18 per hourAs Rec Leader II (Head Coach): $18 - $22 per hourBENEFITSThis is an un-benefited position. Sick leave accrued for hours worked.
