About Us

We are an investigative newsroom that is reporting on the civic nature of science around the world. The primary goal is to bridge the gaps between scholarship and practice in civic science by making it more accessible, informative, and actionable for diverse decision‑makers in the field who are building solutions to benefit society. The Lab conducts investigative civic science journalism to interrogate and unravel ongoing progress and shed light on important developments across the field. The Lab generates new questions for the stakeholders we engage in order to shed light on the actionable insights for researchers across scientific fields and training stages, in addition to practitioners such as science engagers, science journalists, funders, educators, community leaders, and others.

In the Lab, we’re currently looking for motivated multimedia storytellers to help us build our flagship project called the Civic Science Television Network the CivicSciTV Network. The network comprises individual video shows on CivicSciTV, the Civic Science Times digital publication, and also CivicSciTV Radio. If you are a multimedia storyteller who can help us grow the CivicSciTV Network, we would like to connect with you.

What we are looking for:

1. A multimedia science journalist.
2. Someone who is VERY inquisitive.
3. Someone who is a good writer.
4. Someone who is a voracious reader.
5. Someone who is not afraid to ask questions.
6. An active interest and/or experience (as a practitioner, founder, researcher, etc.) within the field of public engagement with science is a must.
7. We are especially looking for folk with video and/or podcast production experience.
8. Appreciation and understanding of the landscape of civic science.
9. Expert proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
10. Exceptional video communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and engagingly.
11. Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.
12. Passionate about science and its communication to the public.
13. Those who are currently in journalism programs or those who have just graduated.
14. Although not required, residence in either Washington DC, Georgia, Virginia, California or Massachusetts is highly desired.

The ideal candidate has an active interest or experience in civic science and has experience working in a collaborative team environment. The candidate is looking for a side gig opportunity to expand their portfolio of work within civic science journalism. The candidate is looking for maximum flexibility to be able to work on their own schedule . We especially welcome those who are currently in journalism programs or those who have just graduated.

The expectation is for the project to last 3-4 months at a cost of around $300-$400/month and will report to the Lab Director, Dr. Fanuel Muindi.
