About the Agency The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. Position Summary Veterinary Specialist (NS) in the Department’s National Animal Health Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a BSL‑3 laboratory with necropsy capability that diagnoses, surveils, and assists in responding to and preventing animal disease. Key Responsibilities Provide high‑quality diagnostic services through necropsy, histopathology, case coordination, and client consultation on predominantly avian/poultry caseloads. Conduct outreach and engage stakeholders, including veterinarians, poultry industry representatives, and producers. Teach and mentor avian pathology to residents as appropriate based on interest, case load, experience, and qualifications. Qualifications Must be a DVM or equivalent degree and have completed a veterinary pathology residency program. Eligible to practice veterinary medicine in North Carolina. Extensive knowledge of veterinary pathology; board certification or eligibility with the American College of Veterinary Pathologists preferred. Minimum of two years of veterinary diagnostic laboratory experience. Salary and Benefits Recruitment Range: $92,752 – $150,000.
