Summary

This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, within the Painters, Masonry, and Insulators Section. As a Painter , you will use brushes, rollers, and/or spray equipment to paint various structures, manufacturing equipment, and finishes to wooden furniture, wall systems, cabinets, ornate trim, doors, and floors to provide a decorative as well as protective coating.

As a Painter , you will:

• Prepare surfaces and apply various coatings such as primers, paints, epoxies, urethane, stains, and sealers to building systems, machinery, manufacturing equipment and office furnishings.
• Evaluate condition of the surface to be covered and select a surface preparation technique and material consistent with the type and condition of surface, coating material applied, exposure and expected condition of use. Remove old surface coating and cleans away dirt, rust, grease or other surface impurities which would deter adhesion qualities of the coating material.
• Select, prepare, and apply coatings to surface using brush, rollers, or various types of spray equipment.
• Perform other task such as sign painting, engraving, and installation. Work includes the use of computer-controlled software and automated engraving machines.
• Perform lead paint abatement that requires a professional certification.

• Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment.
• Pass a pre-employment physical examination.
• Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
• Weekend work and overtime, if applicable, will be scheduled when needed based on production requirements as determined by Management.

Physical Requirements:

Job requires extensive walking, standing, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing and lifting. Incumbent must have the ability to work from scaffolds, ladders, platforms and in cramped positions and confined spaces.

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

This position requires a 4-year apprenticeship in painting OR 4 years of practical experience in the trade working with journeyman painters. Training must be sufficient in content and progressive acquirement of trade skills to be the substantial equivalent of a completed apprenticeship. Applicants must provide proof of completion of a 4-year apprenticeship or have 4 years of documented experience working with journeyman painters. Applicants qualifying with 4 years of experience must provide references at time of interview to verify journeyman status.

I have the ability to perform common Painter duties. I can paint, decorate, and refinish interior and exterior surfaces that may require a protective or decorative coating. I can evaluate surface conditions and select a preparation technique consistent with the type and condition, the coating material to be applied, and the exposure and expected condition of use. I can perform such tasks without more than normal supervision.
