Licensed Practical Nurse

Position: School Health Nurse/ Licensed Practical Nurse

Qualifications:

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing program
• Minimum of one year experience in nursing in the field of Pediatrics, Ambulatory Care, Public Health or School Health
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a license to practice in the State of Alabama
• Current certification in Basic Life Support
• Valid Alabama driver's license
• Physical assessment skills, knowledge of growth and development, effective communication skills (Experience with computer information systems advantageous).

Job Goal: To provide health assessment, counseling, health education and direct services to students through the health services program of the district.

Reports to: System School Health or Director of Student Services

Performance Responsibilities:

• Plan and implement comprehensive school health program in collaboration with the system school health nurse and school administrators.
• Conduct faculty in-services regarding school health issues.
• Provide nursing care for illness and injury occurring during school hours.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate specified health screenings mandated by state law.
• Assist in administering medication to students according to approved guidelines.
• Maintain a system of student health information and records.
• Counsel students and parents regarding health care and available resources.
• Assist in enforcing and reporting compliance with Alabama law regarding immunization requirements for all students.
• Serve as a liaison between the home, students, school and health professionals to assure health needs are met. Make home visits as necessary to assess family needs in relation to student's health.
• Participate in the functions of the Building Base Support Teams for assessment, planning and interventions to meet student needs. Serve as a resource for students, parents and faculty in meeting needs for students receiving 504 or special education services.
• Provide for student health and safety by participating in the development of Emergency Action Plans and Individual Health Plans where appropriate.
• Instruct and monitor guidelines and Board policy regarding health and safety issues including Communicable Diseases, medication delivery and other health related issues.
• Participate with system school health nurse, school administrators and faculty in developing Multi-hazard management plans (School Safety Plans), Safe and Drug-Free Schools programs, and At-Risk programs.
• Facilitate the Alabama Course of Study for Health Education.
• Attend professional development meetings according to Board policy
• Perform other duties as requested by the System School Health Nurse or Director of Student Services within the established guidelines of the Alabama Board of Nursing, Alabama Department of Public Health and Alabama State Department of Education.

Contract Period: Salary and work year to be established by the Board. Salary in adherence and compliance with the approved salary schedule.

Evaluation: According to established Board policies, administrative procedures and guidelines and Alabama Board of Nursing Standards of Practice.
