Staffing Description

The unit is staffed with the following personnel:

• Unit clerk on days
• 2-3 Patient Care Technicians (PCT) on both day and night shifts
• Nursing Supervisor
• Hospitalists

Equipment and Documentation

• Type of Equipment: Welch Allyn vitals, Novameter glucose, GE Telemetry, and Rover's
• Documentation System: Meditech-HCA version
• Medication Management: WOW for all nurses, PyxisES dispensing system

Scheduling Requirements

Shifts will include an equivalent of every other weekend (4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule).

Floating Policy

Floating may occur to other medical/surgical areas based on patient needs, including General MS, Orthopedics, PCU (Progressive Care Unit), and Surgical with Oncology.

Patient Experience Requirements

• Bedside Rounding
• Hourly Rounding with 5 P's checked
• Communication of known needs at the beginning and during shifts
• Check glass board for departmental focus areas
• Utilization of scrolling video kiosk and email for updates

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIH Stroke Scale Certification

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

• Cardiac knowledge is preferred
• Advanced skills in Heparin, Cardizem, Dobutamine, Dopamine, and Amiodarone drips

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Chest Tube management
• Wound Vac management
• EKGs as needed

Dress Code

RNs are required to wear Navy scrubs, while CNAs/PCTs should wear ceil blue scrub sets and jackets if desired. T-shirts worn underneath must be white, blue, gray, orange, or black without any graphics. Artificial nails or gel nail polish are not allowed.

Unit Guidelines and Policies

Documentation of telemetry application and acknowledgment of rhythm strips must be completed each shift. There is a strict NO PASS ZONE for bed alarms, call lights, and IV alarms.

We pride ourselves on having experienced Charge Nurses with 12, 16, and 39 years of seniority on days and over 15 years on night shift. We follow a Shared Governance model within the unit and across the facility.
